Press Releases flow out of the CES Show pretty hot and heavy and it is easy to miss, or to forget about some very interesting products. One such product for me was the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker that packs a lot of features into a tiny little wireless speaker. As a matter of fact, the KAI Speaker is the first Bluetooth enabled speaker from X-mini, who has a large range of these mini speakers in the wired category. And as I wrote up in the press release, the need for a good portable speaker has become a real necessity not only for me, but for a lot of people because of all the streaming apps that are available that take advantage of the ever increasing markets for 3G and 4G coverage. So if you are one of the many who want to improve their audio performance wirelessly, but in a small compact device, then check out the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker in another edition of Mobility Digest Review!

In the box you get more than just the speaker, with the KAI you get a very nice carrying case as well as USB to Mini USB charge cable that also has a 3.5mm audio cable built in. Also included is a couple of small little booklets, one being the instructions on how to paid the KAI as well as user manual, and the other being an appeal by XMI to help Children International. Felt that it was was worth mentioning because so few companies use their ability to reach consumers and advocate on behalf of charities. Good stuff XMI.

Out of the box, the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker measures 50mm x 62mm with the resonator closed. Opening the resonator adds about another 31mm to the overall height. The weight of the KAI is 95.2b. The KAI has a rubberized coating over the plastic outer shell that makes it very grip-able as well as an anti fingerprint collector. The rubberized coating also makes it look like it is a very high quality speaker and not just any cheap plastic speaker you can pickup at a convenience store.

With all the build quality the KAI has that I mentioned above, XMI also put a pretty decent battery in it. With it’s 550mAh battery, you can expect to get up to 8 hours of playback time and that is after you get done charging it for 2.5 hours because that is how long it takes to charge up the KAI. I thought the battery life was very good and over several days of testing I know I got 8 or more hours out of the KAI which is pretty decent in my book. With it’s USB charging, the KAI is easy to make sure it stays full of juice plugged into your computer while at work or at play.

With it’s Bluetooth compliant v2.1 + EDR A2DP Stereo capabilities, the KAI will stay connected to your device up to 33 feet. Of course that is 33 feet from from obstruction. The Bluetooth playback time suffers more than the corded time, the BT is cut in half and lasts up to 4 hours . Pairing the KAI is super easy. All you have to do is turn it in and pick up your phone and navigate to the Bluetooth setting and find the KAI listed in the found device list. Tap the KAI on that list and pairing is pretty fast and no password is required. Very painless indeed!

The speaker on the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker is pretty good for something so small. The speaker is a Magnetically Shielded 40mm driver. This is an increase over the 36mm speaker XMI was using before. The result is better sound overall. The loudspeaker output is 2.5w with a Frequency Response of 100 Hz – 18 kHz. The Signal-to-Noise ratio is ≥89dB and the Distortion is ≤0.3%. Overall the Speaker is rich in sound and has enough punch to hear from across the room. You won’ t be thumpin’’ but it’s the best highs and lows I have heard from a speaker this small. I really enjoyed listening to the KAI while playing wide ranges of different music.

The X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker has another very useful speaker and that is it’s built in microphone. Not only will you be able to hear a conference call or group call in great audio quality, but you will also be able to utilize the built in speaker as well! The microphone has a sensitivity of –34db. Here again too I really thought the KAI did a super job handling the usually poor connection international calls I have to make for work. This is a very handy feature for customers wanting to hook the KAI up to their smartphones. When a call comes in, all you have to do is answer it and you are hands free. It is not necessary to remove a 3.5mm cord connecting your device to a portable speaker for you to make and receive a call.

I review a lot of gadgets and I got to tell you that the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker is one gadget I really liked and continue to not be able to put down. It is so small and compact that I can take it along anywhere with me. Of course the one thing is was missing was a lanyard which I don’t think is very necessary of there than that XMI molded in a lanyard provision in the KAI. So by now you got to be asking yourself, where di XMI get the name KAI from anyway? As it turns out, the KAI is “Fondly named after CEO Ryan Lee’s nephew, Kai, who is the first in the next generation of his family”. The only downside I have seen so far with the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker is the cost. Now granted this device comes with a lot of whistles and bells and for this reviewer is pretty darn cool, but with a US price tag of about $110.00, I think XMI may want to rethink their pricing structure some prior to launching it here. The last issue is that the KAI is not available yet. XMI is taking pre-orders and when you do, they are providing a free lanyard, something that should have been supplied with the device anyway. Knowing that Amazon will most likely get the pricing straightened out on the KAI and give consumers an avenue to purchase the KAI for a lot less money, I think this is really device you need to consider if you are in the market for a small portable Bluetooth Speaker. The quality, sound, features really put the KAI at the top of the list for my must have list of gadgets.

PROS

Great sound and build quality

Supplied with a very nice carrying case and power USB cable

Easy to pair with your smartphone, tablet, or pc.

CONS

Price has got to be the biggest concern at $110.00 USD

No Lanyard included in package

Head on over to the XMI website for more information and to preorder if the X-mini KAI Capsule Speaker fits the bill for all your portable wireless audio needs.

The Virtual Keyboard allows you to type on any surface and works with Android or iOS devices over Bluetooth. I still want one, I remember when similar ones like these came out but I think the tech is now to the point that it might actually be useful. Price is still a bit high at $199.95, but if I could get one for review I’d be happy..

Continuing its 164-year history of offering the Best, the Only and the Unexpected, Hammacher Schlemmer introduces The Virtual Keyboard, a laser-generated keyboard that controls an iPad, iPhone, or Android-driven phone.

The device’s Class II laser projects a 9 3/4" x 4" keyboard with 3/4" keys onto any flat, opaque surface. Its optical sensor recognizes keystrokes in three dimensions and detects finger placement so that it distinguishes between a finger hovering over or pressing a "key."

An invisible infrared horizontal plane projected millimeters above the surface detects actual contact with the key. When a finger breaks the plane, the projector assigns a keyboard character and transmits it to a paired device.

"The Virtual Keyboard transmits 100% accurate keystrokes to a smartphone or iPad while eliminating the hassle of typing on a mobile device’s small touchscreen," explained Hammacher Schlemmer’s General Manager Fred Berns.

The Virtual Keyboard connects to devices via Bluetooth and keeps pace with typing speeds up to 400 characters per minute. The unit’s rechargeable battery provides up to 2 1/2-hours of typing after a 1 1/2-hour charge and its 3"-tall projector stores unobtrusively inside a pocket or briefcase, eliminating the need to travel with bulky, physical keyboards

The Virtual Keyboard is available from Hammacher Schlemmer for $199.95. For more information about this product, please visit www.hammacher.com/81759

Most of you may be thinking yeah, set it on your desk, or use it while working out, walking on the dreaded treadmill, or even outside doing yard work. But for me, I use mine while Barbequing and would you believe while hunting? I know, a lot of you may not hunt, but I like to deer hunt. And down here deep in the South, the Rut (mating season) comes very late. A lot of guys use calls to mimic another Buck in the area to try to lure in another Big Buck is also thinking of getting his groove on with a Doe and challenging the origin of that sound. I knew there was bit of science behind making grunt calls, so I looked on line and would you believe that there is an iPhone (actually several) that actually make a variety of calls to get a Buck’s attention! the problem is that the iPhone speaker, or any cell phone for that matter, is not loud enough. So I have been taking my SCOSCHE boomCAN plugged into my iPhone and trying to call them in! So far not too much success, but it actually works! So what’s my point? I really like these mini speakers and find them very useful.

So that’s why I predicated this press release with my own personal revelation about mini speakers is to get you primed for the announcement that X-mini is about to launch their newest capsule speaker called the KAI. No more plugged in mini speakers, this version is Bluetooth and will allow you hands free mini speaker sounds! The press release is below and has all the details. I am going to keep tabs on the X-mini as this looks to be the perfect successor to my plugged boomCAN!

This is kind of neat. At first I thought it was a BT headset with a retractable boom mic, I just read the headline of course. Reading on though I found that it’s actually the ear piece that is retractable! You clip the main part onto your shirt or collar or pocket and then just pull out the earbud. It’s officially launching at CES, and I don’t see a price listed anywhere…

Azeca is launching its new Retractable Bluetooth Headset at CES 2012. This first-of-its-kind, clip-on Bluetooth headset with retractable ear bud that allows users to answer or make calls with one quick touch of a button, now includes vibration.

The chic, sleek design of the Azeca Retractable Bluetooth Headset allows the user to simply inserts the ear bud into the ear when answering a call, preventing ear fatigue and the awkward ear attachment that accompanies most Bluetooth headsets. The built-in mic, easy-to-reach controls and voice calling features allow for easy dial-out. Best of all, the headset includes a vibration feature, which can be operated in quiet mode — an ideal solution for users who want to be inconspicuous, yet never miss an important call.

The Retractable Bluetooth Headset with Vibration won the CES Innovations 2012 Design and Engineering Award in November 2011. It’s the latest game-changing creation for the Atlanta-based company, which has been a pioneer in differentiated innovation since its inception in 2010. Azeca’s primary objective is bringing practical, easy-to-use and aesthetically appealing designs to the consumer electronics market. To that end, much of the company’s product development focuses on wireless stereo listening and hands-free communication. The company is actively pursuing new concepts and creating unique applications to enhance existing Bluetooth® categories in areas of fitness, stereo listening, and hands-free communication.

Azeca is the brainchild of Mark Martinez, a former Senior Brand Manager for a Fortune 500 company with more than 20 years of experience in consumer products. Before launching Azeca, Martinez guided an organization from the start-up to profitability. The company is based in Johns Creek, Georgia, a suburb of Atlanta.

Are you a fitness nut, then this latest product might be for you! It’s a Bluetooth heart rate monitor that supposedly works with most any of the popular fitness apps out there today. As far as hardware compatibility it says it works with the iPhone 4S and “other Bluetooth Smart Ready devices”. Not exactly sure what that means, but I guess we’ll find out more when it’s officially unveiled at CES in January. For now here’s a little bit of info on it:

Wahoo Fitness, the leader in smartphone fitness technology, announces the Wahoo Fitness Blue HR, the world’s first Bluetooth Smart heart rate monitor. Using the latest in Bluetooth technology, the Blue HR (Heart Rate) will communicate directly with the iPhone 4S and other Bluetooth Smart Ready devices, providing users with real-time heart rate readings on their smartphone. With Wahoo’s Blue HR and the fitness app of your choice, you now have your heart rate data, music playlists, phone, GPS maps and more, all in one place. Priced at $79.99, Wahoo’s Blue HR will hit stores nationwide in January of 2012.

To see Wahoo Fitness’ Blue HR product test, click HERE

Blue HR is launching with full support of several of Wahoo Fitness’ app partners, who have been working with Wahoo’s Open API to support the Blue HR. Already tested and released in the App Store are several of the most popular fitness apps – MapMyFitness, RunKeeper, 321Run, Runmeter, and MotionX – with more to come in 2012. Without ties to a specific app, Wahoo’s heart rate strap provides the millions of users already using these apps, with the heart monitoring information they need, regardless of sport, in a customizable application of their choice.

“So many smartphone fitness monitors limit you to using their own smartphone application,” says Chip Hawkins, CEO of Wahoo Fitness. “Wahoo has been working with the top fitness app developers on other smartphone fitness monitors for years, so the Blue HR is simply the next step. Our partnerships allow users to easily incorporate all their fitness data into the app they already know and love. Whether you log your miles on Runkeeper, MapMyRide, or one of the other top 100 fitness apps, the Blue HR will seamlessly integrate your heart rate data into the interface of your choice.”

The Blue HR also marks the first release of a Bluetooth Smart app enabled accessory for the iPhone 4S. Like the iPhone 4S, by the end of 2012, virtually all new smartphones will include the Bluetooth v4.0 technology that is in all Bluetooth Smart Ready devices. Bluetooth Smart is a low-energy wireless technology that provides longer battery life, enhanced range, and creates new opportunities for Bluetooth product developers and manufacturers, specifically in the markets of health care, sports, fitness, security, and home entertainment.

Wahoo Fitness Blue HR features include:
• Wirelessly relays heart rate information via Bluetooth Smart technology to your iPhone 4S and other Bluetooth Smart Ready devices, no additional hardware or key needed
• Generates heart rate information in real-time, providing the most accurate number of calories burned during workout
• Compatible with the most popular fitness apps, including Runkeeper, MapMyRun, and the free Wahoo Fitness App
• Optional Wahoo Armband provides comfortable protection for your iPhone 4S with full touch screen access

The USB adapter is very small as you can see from the following picture:

The case is very nice, it looks like carbon fiber and has dual zippers on it. The Arctic logo is on the top, it’s soft inside and the case itself is rather hard.

Here’s what it looks like with the headphones inside, it is a bit cramped in there.

The headphones are over the back of the neck style, not my favorite kind, but I don’t hate the style either.

The right side earpiece is where you’ll find the controls for volume, skip and play/pause or answer/end. The center phone button is both play and answer.

The left side just had the Arctic logo on it and a design that mirrors the right side.

The P31X gets charged via USB and the connector is hidden behind a rubber door on the side.

The earpds are very soft and ‘puffy’ making them comfortable.

Impressions / Review:

As I said the headphones charge via USB, and when charging there’s a red LED on them. Sadly I really didn’t pay attention to charge time, I plugged them in and got some work done while they charged. It did seem though that they didn’t take that long at all to charge.

For testing I used the P31X with my Samsung Captivate, Le Pan Android tablet and my HTC Surround WP7 phone. When the headphones are connected the LED will blink blue every so often. They connected easily and with no hassles to each device.

The controls worked with all of my devices, everything was controlled perfectly with no issues at all.

The range on these headphones is just amazing and it seems like not much interferes with the signal either. I can easily walk around the house and even upstairs and have no signal lose at all. No interruptions in the music, just nice and clear sound.

Speaking of sound, the quality is excellent really. I didn’t expect that much honestly but I was pleasantly surprised by just how good the sound is. The highs are clear, and the lows are nice and low,. There’s not a lot of bass, but it’s there and that’s fine with me. I’m not one for thumping bass in my ears.

They can get loud and still remain clear, and they do a decent decent job of keeping outside sounds out.

The P31X earpads are very comfortable for long periods of use, they’re very soft.

The included carrying case is a nice addition, and it will protect the headphones but the case is rather tight, you have to move them around a bit to get them in there. The case being hard will protect the headphones from most anything you can throw at or on them. You can just toss them in your case and then toss the case in a bag and not worry much at all.

Conclusion:

This is a mobility site so you may not know this but, Arctic used to be named Arctic Cooling and they specialized in quality cooling products. They’ve come a long way from cooling that’s for sure…

The P31X Pack Bluetooth Headphones were certainly a surprise in both their build quality and sound quality. These are some of the nicest Bluetooth headphones I’ve had the chance to review or own. The sound quality is very good, I would have to say excellent really. Decent highs and nice bass, not too much, but it’s just right for me.

The included carrying case is a nice way to carry them with you and make sure they’re protected . The case is hard so they won’t get crushed, you can just toss them in your bag and not worry too much about them.

You can use the P31X with pretty much any Bluetooth enabled device but you an also use them with your computers thanks to the included USB Bluetooth dongle.

It’s a package deal, and the price is $59.95 which I think is well worth it really.

If you’re looking for a new BT headset than I can highly recommend these to you. I think you’ll be very happy with them, I know I am.

Pros:
+Nice case included
+Excellent battery life
+Great range
+Comfortable for long periods
+Works with everything I tried

Cons:
-Tight fit in case

As an Android fan I’ve always wanted one of those little Android mascot robots, but just never got one and now I have! Today for review I’ve got the Android Bluetooth Sound Box with Hands-Free from our friends at Mobile Fun. It’s a speaker and it’s also a speakerphone, and I like it.

Price: £19.95 / $31.50

Overall Rating: 4.5/5

Android Bluetooth Sound Box with Hands-Free

Wirelessly stream your tunes through this funky Android, who will also let control your phone and handle your calls with the built-in handsfree.

Stream your music wirelessly via Bluetooth 3.0 for crystal clarity
With the Android Sound Box, you can keep your phone in your pocket while you chill out to your favorite tunes. Utilizing Bluetooth 3.0 for maximum compatibility and the best quality signal, this speaker sounds as good as, if not better than, similar quality wired alternatives.

Small but powerful 2W speaker provides a room-filling sound
Utilizing the latest in mobile speaker technology, the Android Sound Box packs a powerful 2W speaker into it’s small frame. This lets you enjoy your music wherever you are, and if you’re using the hands-free capabilities you’ll be able to hear whoever’s calling perfectly. The speaker comes with a desk stand to elevate it and thus help expand the sound even more.

Robot’s head acts as a control for your phone, letting you change tracks with a twist or pause with a push
The top of the robot can be moved to let you control your tracks, play/pause music, or activate voice-dialing with a simple motion. The head rotates left and right for track changes, while it acts as a button for the other features.

Integrated microphone lets you handle your calls completely hands-free
Built-in to the top of the unit is also a handy microphone. This is perfect for hands-free calls so you don’t have to reach for your phone when a call comes in, and can also be used for voice dialing or voice commands.

Built-in battery for use on the go
Don’t worry about having to be tethered to a power source – with the Android Sound Box you can pick up and play wherever you want. The integrated battery will keep pumping out your tunes for up to 10 hours. The speaker comes with a mini USB cable for charging via a PC or USB mains adapter.

mobile phone speakers

What’s in the Box?

The Android Bluetooth Sound Box with Hands-Free comes in a nice looking box.

In the box you’ll find the speaker, user manual, USB cable and a small metal stand.

The speaker looks like the Android mascot, and I like it. It’s plastic of course, most things are these days but it’s lightweight and feels well made with nice attention to detail. One of the eyes is a microphone and there’s a translucent part beneath the head that holds an LED.

The arms can be positioned as well to pose him how you want.

The head is actually a button to push down, and it turns left and right to control volume.

On the back you’ll find the USB port for charging and the on/off switch.

On the bottom you’ll find rubber feet and you’ll see the main speaker.

Here’s the little stand included to elevate the speaker to help produce better sound.

Impressions / Review:

When charging the Android will light up red.

I tested it with two Android devices, my Samsung Galaxy S Captivate and my Le Pan TC 970 tablet. In the second picture below you can see the robot lighting up blue, it blinks while it’s on every once in a while.

I found that it did work, at least for streaming music anyway. The controls didn’t work on either device sadly. On the tablet the controls didn’t do anything. The same thing with the Captivate, the controls don’t do anything either.

I also tried it with my HTC Surround, WP7 phone and streaming music did work.

Here the controls didn’t work either except for when I pushed down on the head, it activated voice commands.

I’m not sure why the controls don’t work on any of my devices, it says it’s Bluetooth 3.0, and my devices aren’t so I could guess that might be the problem, but somehow I don’t think so.

Regarding the stand, I found that it really does work to expand the sound coming from the speaker. The little stand makes it louder and more clear it seems.

The sound from the speaker is decent, but at loud levels it can get distorted. It is only a single speaker so don’t expect stereo sound, but still it works well.

Conclusion:

The Android Bluetooth Sound Box with Hands-Free from Mobile Fun is a neat little gadget for sure. I like it and it sounds very good. If you want your own little Android that does much more than sit there and look cute, then you might want to think about getting one of these.

It is the holiday shopping season after all, and I think any Android fan would appreciate one of these in their stocking or under the tree!

The problems I encountered were odd, I’ve not come across any Bluetooth devices that don’t work the way they should. As I speculated earlier, it might be because of the fact that it runs on Bluetooth 3.0, or not. It still works though as a speaker.

Pros:
+Long battery life
+Can get very loud
+Decent sound overall
+Can be used as speakerphone
+Nicely made
+It’s a cool little accessory

Cons:
-Controls don’t work with many devices
-Sound can get distorted at high levels

A New Kind of Audio

Bose engineers developed inventions to do something that hadn’t been done to date: reproduce full-range audio from a single, hand-held enclosure. The SoundLink® speaker’s audio impact defies its size. It combines four low-profile neodymium transducers for clear high- and mid-frequencies, with new dual-opposing passive radiators — designed with a patented waffle-shaped surround — for rich, deep, low notes. With the radiators placed in an opposing fashion, vibration is eliminated, turning the energy into acoustic power. The speaker’s audio package is complemented with sophisticated electronics, including Bose® digital signal processing algorithms, to reproduce instrument definition and detail at any volume.

A New Kind of Mobility

Delivering quality sound wasn’t enough: the SoundLink® Mobile speaker had to meet other rigid criteria to achieve its design goals. At less than two inches thick, and no bigger than an average book, it can easily fit in a bag, backpack or briefcase. For instant setup, its integrated cover unfolds into a stand. Open the cover, and the system is ready to be played. Close it, and the system shuts off. A rechargeable lithium-ion battery supplies power for more than three hours at high volume, and for more than eight hours at typical listening levels, making it ideal for the beach, park, party, home, or office.

A New Kind of Durability

The SoundLink® speaker is a road warrior. While no mobile device can endure every circumstance, the SoundLink® speaker was built to withstand the rigors of daily use like no other product in its category. It was tested in Bose environmental labs to resist salt-fog, sand, wind, and moisture. And using end-caps made from automotive-grade chrome, it will survive being dropped — repeatedly.

The Convenience of Wireless

The SoundLink® Mobile speaker features Advanced Audio Distribution Profile (A2DP) and a powerful antenna for a reliable wireless audio connection. Pairing takes moments, and wirelessly connecting to a smartphone or tablet is as easy as pressing one button on the speaker’s control panel. The six most recently used Bluetooth® devices are stored in memory, eliminating the need to pair again. And music can be streamed while texting, emailing or web-browsing.

“Bluetooth speakers have been available before today, but we believe the SoundLink® Wireless Mobile speaker represents a step forward — a better experience,” said Roselli. “We also believe that people will reach for it again and again, and enjoy their music in ways and places they never imagined.”

Trim Options, Accessories, Availability

The SoundLink® Wireless Mobile speaker comes with a standard trim level and a dark gray Cordura® nylon cover for $299.95, or in the LX model, with a premium trim level and a dark brown leather cover for $349.95. Accessory covers in nylon (bright red or royal purple) and leather (burgundy or tan) are available separately for $29.95 and $49.95, respectively. The SoundLink® Mobile speaker and its accessory covers will be sold at Bose retail stores, www.Bose.com, toll-free at 1-800-444-BOSE (2673) and at select authorized Bose dealers.

About Bose Corporation

Bose Corporation was founded in 1964 by Dr. Amar G. Bose, professor at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Today, the company is primarily known for acoustics; however, its research has resulted in products for non-audio fields.

Bose inventions have improved the performance of:

Loudspeakers

Home entertainment systems

Automotive music systems designed for the interior acoustics of each car model (first introduced by Bose)

Noise reducing headsets for pilots and the public (first introduced by Bose)
