Since its inception, Smooth YouTube Downloader has helped the prolific community of Windows Mobile device holders around the world to download YouTube videos to their device’s more reliable onboard storage or media card without having to worry about data speeds, network coverage, or WEP keys. While ironically many companies are trying to move our “personal belongings” to overloaded “cloud servers” in the sky that require constant and reliable network access, having your files with you reduces the wait and saves precious battery life, not to mention the bandwidth that would’ve been otherwise wasted (which isn’t a good thing in this day and age with so many carriers charging massive costs for extremely small amounts of data). Smooth YouTube downloader comes with a nifty skin and allows you to pick the desired resolution for your download from QVGA size FLV files to WXGA size MP4s and everything inbetween. The program itself supports many common device resolutions too from QVGA to WVGA so that more Windows Mobile enthusiasts can enjoy the software, thanks to Zorc.

For years, SciLor’s GrooveMobile has helped smartphone users to listen to most any song available on GrooveShark without having to pay for or download the track. While many developers have strayed from the formidable platform that Windows Mobile 6 offers, SciLor is still on the front line and continues to release updates to his GrooveMobile and GrooveDownloaderWM software as needed, in addition to a host of other useful utilities for Windows, Android, and plugins for the “Chrome” browser. GrooveMobile is perfect for those songs that you don’t like quite enough to download and put on your device, but sometimes get bored enough to listen to. It is also great for discovering new music as it has a tab that will show you the software’s hottest selections. When you’ve racked up a formidable playlist of music that you really like, you can grab a copy of SciLor’s GrooveDownloaderWM to download the music as an .MP3 file to your handheld that you can listen to anytime.

Updates had been coming rather slowly as the last release had been Spring Break of 2011 and Thanksgiving of 2010. This time, 2 Bunny has made some significant upgrades and fixes in this version of Elite to make it the most complete version ever. The ROM thread tells the story of the ROM’s humble beginnings when 2 Bunny simply could not find a ROM he could depend on and how after asking around a few threads, he found his way to the Diamond OMJ kitchen, and later a special modified version of the Calkulin kitchen that he found by chance on Mediafire. From there, he spent many painstaking hours monitoring countless registry changes in Kheb and fixing them with Agent Ransack. Unlike other chefs, 2 Bunny still talks in the thread and updates the ROM as needed, even after others have “quit” the Diamond ROM development scene. Even to this day, Elite remains a community favorite and is even touted by one PPCGeeker as, “better than Energy Rom”.

If you’re still on the CDMA HTC Diamond and want an excellent Light alternative to the stock ROM, 2 Bunny’s “Elite” may be for you. Head on over to the thread over at PPCGeeks.

NICQUE, the popular author of Windows Mobile freeware released a brand new version of GczII on July 1st (version “0.2.35.76”). GczII is a popular freeware Geocaching.com client, where you can search for geocaches by Zipcode, cache name, author’s name, trackables, and of course geographical distance from your current GPS location. For those of you not familiar, Geocaching is a sport which (after registering for a free account on their website) allows you access to the coordinates for thousands and thousands of geocaches worldwide. Each geocache is a container hidden somewhere in public which can be located with the coordinates provided for it on Geocaching.com, which can get you around 10-30 feet from the “cache” (from there, GPS is too imprecise and you must use your wits to find the spoils). When you get to the cache (these can be in parks, parking lots, off a hiking trail, etc.), you can sign the logbook and if the cache is physically large enough (the size of the cache varies wildly – usually a small plastic box though), exchange small trinkets. When you get home, you also sign the log on the site.

GczII saves the user the hassle of not only needing to have a separate GPS receiver, but you also do not have to print off countless cache pages or worry about typing the coordinates just perfectly into a secondary receiver. It is a “green” solution, and also much easier.

Its been a while sine anything non-Android got any love from Sprint. Honestly, who can blame them seeing as the Evo 4G and the Epic 4G have done wonders for the carrier. Now enters in the HTC Arrive, Microsoft’s first CDMA Windows Phone 7 device on the Sprint NOW Network. For those of you who have been patiently (i hope) waiting for this beauty to arrive since the Windows Phone launch in October your day is finally coming. Pre-orders start today with a $50 gift card and it goes for $200 on contract.

A few key highlights:

Full landscape QWERTY keyboard. It should be in the same class as the outstanding Touch Pro 2.

1 GHz snapdragon processor

3.6” WVGA display

5 MP Camera

720P video capture

16GB of internal memory (European version only has 8GB)

Launches with NoDo update including copy and paste!

As a proud owner of the HTC Touch Pro 2 on Sprint in addition to my HTC Surround I can say this is a solid upgrade from the Touch Pro 2 which launched with out of date specs. The responsiveness of the Windows Phone OS, ample 16GB internal memory and what is sure to be a candidate for best-in-class keyboarding (both physical and virtual) and a rapidly growing app marketplace I can see this device really making its mark on Sprint. Just point anyone not drooling over the Android section to this one and you might have yourself a winner.

Oh yeah and did I mention that unlike the costly AT&T Navigator ($9.99 monthly) chances are Sprint will be including the Sprint Navigation as part of its Hub offerings. When you add up all this plus the affordable Everything Plan Sprint has going on and you quite possibly can get the best Windows Phone 7 experience this side of (take your pick.)

Here is a great way to look at things. You can get the Zune Pass, Netflix and spam the heck out of them both using the Simply Everything plan from Sprint all for lower the cost of a decent 2GB data & messaging plan from AT&T. Windows Phone in its truest form right here!

Verizon will have a tricky but enjoyable decision to make. Do you offend your Android carrying, 30 Day expiration date phone rotating customers because the big daddy comes to town? Do they play that “everyone is created equal” angle? Probably in the end we’ll get that much cherished and totally craptastic “each child is special in their own way” cliché. You know the kind, when you have a genius and overachiever and then you have a kid so dumb he couldn’t recite walk and chew gum at the same kind.

Well the iOS ecosystem is poised to get larger and exponentially fast. Welcome to the future America where Apple is the new Evil Empire kicking tail and taking names!!!

I had one thought in my mind when I read that Xbox Live brought in over 1 Billion dollars in the last fiscal year. Investment! Just like people are reluctant to give up their iPhones because of the investment they have made in their apps and iTunes purchases. This also tells me “free for all” isn’t as much of a factor as it seems to be. I mean really who doesn’t gladly drop cold hard cash for the things they want most? Ever heard of a little known holiday called Christmas? I’m telling you all right now I am decking out my avatar in the coolest gear imaginable. I want one of those cool 3D avatars that Aura is coming out with. I strongly encourage you to check out the video. Its worth few minutes of your time.

You see the game plan all along has been to steadily (roughly monthly) release details showing off different parts of the WP7 platform. Followed by cranking up the marketing and advertising blitz starting 60-90 days from launch. I would argue that it is best to start 90 days out and not 60. That gives just enough time for all the heavy iPhone 4 coverage to die down and maximize the bang for the buck. Very strategic and appropriate plan if you ask me. The cancelling of the KIN phones means nothing. In fact it just means one less distraction that can get in the way of the second most important launch Microsoft is responsible for in the last 2 years. The first is of course Windows 7. We all know Microsoft wouldn’t have been able to stop itself from spending way too much resources and time on KIN despite the limited return.

Luck is on the side of the prepared. Windows Phone 7 is being billed as a phone that just works and works well. Keeping the user connected and maximizing their life. The fact that the iPhone 4 has experienced such glaring issues like reception drops, proximity sensor errors, can only bode well for Microsoft. Not because I hope the iPhone 4 tanks completely because I actually applaud Apple’s success. Someone has to keep Microsoft pushing on the gas peddle because Microsoft tends to get complacent when they aren’t pushed. Its because it goes to show that even the market leader can have difficulties and that a lesson can learned by all of this. Notice how iPhone users are all “just wait and hope issues are fixed in the next software update.” Sounds awfully familiar to what I and others have been saying about the advantage of being able to push out OTA updates without having to wait for carriers. It tends to give customers comfort of knowing they’ll get their fix ASAP. To error is human, so remember that the next time you seek to bash Microsoft for a misstep. Microsoft has held strong to the belief that they will go to launch with features that work and work exceedingly well. There is something to be said for doing the job right the first time.

Xbox Live is getting a monumental push as WP7 gets closer to launch. Premiere titles will be getting the same release treatment that regular gaming titles gets. Microsoft is really trying to roll out the red carpet for top notch developers of the Xbox platform. That is why it is so much secrecy going on. Just be a little patient. Look for almost all of the Xbox Live Arcade games to make their way to the WP7 platform by Christmas 2010.

Microsoft is doing a phenomenal job with Bing. Not only have they managed to get it as default search options on MACs but also the iPhone. That shows you that more than just softies think highly of the search, err decision, engine. It also doesn’t hurt that now millions of iPhone users will be used to Bing probably both on the desktop and phone if they ever wanted to try something other than the iPhone. Its clear they mean business and all that is left is to make sure the Bing search button on WP7 actually includes global phone search option. If not this is a major and incomprehensible shortcoming.

I understand gaming and social networking isn’t everyone’s cup of tea. The thing is that it is fast becoming a necessary, if even evil, part of life. As the world dives deeper in to Facebook, flickr and twitter the need to keep up with your colleagues and friends will drive most of us to engage even if we really don’t want to. Microsoft sees this, has finally begun to integrate their unmatched cloud services and are about to leverage the totality of their ecosystem (cloud, gaming, desktop, mobile, office) to place Windows Phone 7 smack dab in the middle of it all.

Windows Phone 7 coming this fall…Ready.Set.7!

In any case, for those of you that didn’t catch this on any of the other blogs, HTC released the Wildfire, which is a Sense Based Android device with some cool specs. I know Android has been read hot lately and things are not slowing down with the device releases either. The Wildfire will sport the Android 2.1 OS behind the HTC Sense User Interface we all have come to know and love. Also interesting is the 3.2” QVGA Capacitive Touch Screen along with a healthy 1300 mAh battery. Pictures will show up in 5 mega pixel flavor and will pack a Qualcomm 528 MHz (MSM7225) Processor Punch. Click below to enlarge the rest of the specs:

The HTC Wildfire Android device will be released in it’s full CDMA glory in Asia first sometime around the third Quarter 2010. No word on pricing or if it will make it to this side of the world yet but stay tuned.

For your HTC Wildfire reading pleasure we have the full press release queued up for you after the break.

HTC Corporation, a global designer of smartphones, today introduced HTC Wildfire™, a new HTC Sense-based Android phone that integrates the most popular social networks to help bring your friends closer to you. HTC Wildfire closely follows the success of the acclaimed HTC Desire and makes the company’s signature HTC Sense experience accessible to a younger audience.

“Today’s social networks provide an essential forum for friendship with more than 400 million users* – many of whom are young adults – actively sharing their lives with their friends through Facebook,” said Florian Seiche, Vice President, HTC EMEA. “HTC Wildfire makes the HTC Sense experience available to young mobile users for the first time. It brings all your communications into one place, whether it’s through Facebook, Twitter, text messages, images or email, ensuring that you are never far away from the conversation and always close to your friends.”

HTC Wildfire helps you stay connected with those who are most important to you through HTC Sense, a user experience focused on putting people at the centre by making phones work in a more simple and natural way. You won’t miss out on the fun as HTC’s Friend Stream application seamlessly gathers and displays content from social networks like Facebook, Twitter, and Flickr into one organised stream of updates. HTC Wildfire enables you to stay up to date with your friends’ posts, comments, alerts and photos, wherever you are.

In addition, each contact viewed in HTC Wildfire’s address book includes a thread of recent communications with that person, including when you last spoke, recent text messages and emails, and social network updates. When your friend calls, HTC Caller ID displays their Facebook profile photo and latest update, as well as a reminder if their birthday is fast approaching.

Thanks to a new app sharing widget, HTC Wildfire enables you to recommend an application by email, text message or over social networks. Your friends will receive a link allowing them to find the application on the Android Market with a single click and download it to their phone.

Florian Seiche continued, “We understand that people need a better way to navigate their way through the tens of thousands of applications that are currently available on the Android Market. In fact, our own independent research found that consumers are not only hungry for the latest and most popular applications that their friends are using, they want an easier way to find and download them. For the first time ever, you can recommend the newest and coolest apps to a friend or group of friends with HTC Wildfire. With so many applications to choose from, there’s a world of content to discover and pass along to your friends.”

HTC’s latest advanced smartphone is great for viewing and sharing photos on Flickr and for surfing the internet thanks to its 3.2-inch capacitive touch screen. A five-megapixel camera with auto focus and LED flash allows you to capture special moments, while a 3.5mm audio jack and micro SD card slot mean you are never without your favourite songs.

Availability
The new HTC Wildfire will be broadly available to customers across major European and Asian markets from Q3 2010.

By the way, Matt is looking for some inspiration for a new theme. Matt was the developer behind Fuzeberry which was easily the most popular theme for the AT&T Fuze and HTC Touch Pro so you know that anything he does is going to be the BOMB!
