Infinity Blade for iOS gets updated Content Pack #4

Easily my favorite game for the iPad is Infinity Blade. Even though I hadn’t played it much since Infinity Blade II came out, Chair Entertainment isn’t slacking a bit, because they just released an update with Content Pack #4. I gotta say, it is very rare that older games see updates, but with Infinity Blade, it has been really cool with all the updates. Here’s what you get in Content Pack #4:

Elf Defense Hits the Appstore for iOS in HD

Woo-Hoo.. I didn’t have to get up at 5:30am today!! Got up at 7am instead, what a difference it makes too.. Anyway, here’s a new game announcement for you iOS users out there, it’s called Elf Defense and it’s yet another tower defense type of game but this one is with elves obviously. Price is $2.99 for all versions but the iPad is in HD so it’s better looking!

Elf Defense 1.0.1, a stunningly executed, brand new tower defense game from veteran developer JellyOasis, sets a new standard with exceptional graphics and game design.

The premise of the game, well-communicated in both the game’s narrative cut scenes and within the gameplay itself, is simple. Gorilla Gondola Available for Windows Phone and iPhone–Xbox Live Quality Game

Nice right? It seems to have all of the elements you’d expect from a full studio game. And before I go further, here’s the link in iTunes and here’s the Windows Phone link. It’s $2 for iPhone and $3 for Windows Phones and sadly there’s no trial (and a whopping 113mb download).

Here’s the description (which is the same for both platforms except as I’ll note at the end):

Balloon Gunner Goes Free For Windows Phones!

Balloon Gunner is an awesome game for Windows Phones. Almost a year ago I bought it after trying the trial and needing more. Let me just be lazy and quote myself:

The game itself is a 3D plane (ok fine balloon) shooter where you tilt the phone to control your balloon and have to complete your mission. The controls take about two seconds to figure out and the gameplay is great. Of course, you get cannons, missiles and bombs to help you complete you mission. It’s well put together, a lot of fun, looks great and it’s at a great price. It consists of 40 levels and different missions as well.

Of course, the news is that it’s now available in a free flavor (with the paid version now $.99). The developer notes “Free version is now Mango compatible which allows increased FPS and also other new improvements, better explosions plus more.”

Family Fun Game Catch the Monkey Comes to iOS

Catch the Monkey is a new iPhone or iOS game from Mirthwerx that’s meant to be fun for the whole family. The game is meant to be one for everyone with less violence that most any other game out there. The idea is to get the monkeys from the farmer’s field and it seems like acute little game.

Catch the Monkey launches today in the Apple App Store. In Catch the Monkey, adorable and curious monkeys invade an elderly farmer’s field. Players help remove them by using a variety of humorous and non-violent tools. Finding the right tools to use was no easy task.

“We’re steeped in a gaming culture of violence. It was hard to break free and think of new solutions,” says co-designer Thomas Henshell. “Even mobile hits considered family-friendly contain cartoon violence. Plants vs. Zombies has shooting of zombies, while Angry Birds has the crushing of pigs.”

Artist and co-designer Alex Lin recalls the early design dilemmas, “The monkeys are like toddlers: cute, curious, and always getting into trouble. With this artistic direction it was clear the player cannot harm the monkeys. We discarded numerous concepts before one day discovering the key while observing a parent. When toddlers are doing something they shouldn’t, parents will shake a rattle to shift the child’s attention. Parents have been using distraction for centuries! With this distraction concept, we knew we could move forward and make a great game!”

But how would players feel about a non-violent action game? Thomas responds, “We know people may think non-violent means non-fun. This was a huge hurdle. It wasn’t about merely coming up with non-violent solutions, but coming up with fun and engaging non-violent solutions. The distraction mechanic makes for an enjoyable experience that can get quite intense. Yet, beneath the cute, funny visuals, is a game of serious depth. There is plenty of challenge even for the veteran gamer.”

Focus group testing results were extremely positive. “When we saw players giggling, jumping out of their seats, or yelling at the monkeys, we knew we were on to something,” says Alex. “It was difficult, but it feels great to create something families around the world can enjoy.”

Catch the Monkey is a casual action game featuring:

7 types of monkey with over 4,000 frames of hand-drawn animation

10 unique tools to unlock like bubble gum, cardboard box, and paper bags

Use gestures to flick bananas, fling a rubber ducky, or swipe a feather to tickle a monkey

Video games pretty much kick every variety of ass available. This is just a fact. The best video games do far more than put the boot to proverbial butt. They will eat away those tiny minutes of your day you feel like don’t matter until they bleed together into a four to six hour a day habit you can’t seem to kick. This is one of those games. Maybe not for everyone, but this game is currently the monkey on my back and I’m loving every second.

So what you’ve got here is a classic RPG game in the vein of your original Final Fantasy and other 80′s and 90′s games. Throw together a band of 4 adventurer’s from 7 different classes and you’ve got a recipe for awesome. You’ve got Cleric, Sorcerer, Paladin, Juggernaut (Bitch!) Theif, Archer, and Warrior. You can make up any combination of these you would like, even picking two or three of the same character class. As you play through, each of these characters have special abilities and variations in stats and their advancements from each level. This gives you a lot of variety in how you approach combat based on your team building skills. I roll around stomping epic amounts of various monster ass with a Paladin, a thief, an archer, and a sorcerer. There are other good sets but this is just what I prefer. Each character class has their own armor and weapons, although some are shared depending on the item, so not only are you upgrading by leveling, but equipment grants ability bonuses too. Of course you have the traditional array of skill sets: Strength (damage done), Speed (how many attacks and who goes first), Vitality (how many hit points), Focus (how strong magic is) and Spirit (how much mana you have to cast spells). There are items galore from scrolls (to cast spells once) spell books (to learn spells) potions of various kinds, pieces of the creatures you’ve killed which you bring to this one weird person in every town that collects random animal parts and gives you gold and xp. On to gameplay.

This is a turn based adventure game, so you can pretty much still play it when you’re black out drunk. A big win for me and a good portion of our staff. It also enters a bit of strategy in selecting who to attack with what character. You align your team into an order. People at the top get attacked more frequently. Characters with higher speed go before slower characters. You select one person to target with an attack, spell or ability. If the person you’ve attacked dies and you have attacks remaining, they fall automatically on the first enemy available. This could mean spreading a little of damage out across lots (up to of attackers, or taking out two or three of them, so they don’t get attacks on you next round. You have to input all your character commands at the beginning of the round also. This means estimating how much damage each character can dish out a round to maximize whatever strategy you’re using. It can be the difference between taking out every opponent in one round and taking over three times more damage due to a small misjudgment. I’ve been playing for more than two months now and I’m still not finished with the main story line. The map is huge and you have random encounters as you’re exploring the terrain. You have different kinds of terrain, which doesn’t effect combat but does vary things visually, keeping things fresh. Even after you finish the main quest, there is a dungeon in one of the towns that changes to something completely random every time you enter and it also levels with your characters, giving this game nearly limitless replay.

If I give you guys any more information on this game, it’s going to turn into a strategy guide, so I’m going to leave it with this and tell you this game makes even bee’s knees feel jealous of its incredible awesomeness. The game gets regular updates from the developer so you should be seeing more improvements, new areas and items, new character types, and other awesomeness that can not be conceived of. Give it a shot. It’s free, but there is also a paid version without ads at 6.99$. I gave the man some money, not because the ads were intrusive, but because this guy deserves some serious dough for bringing such an incredible title to Windows Phone. Get the app here.

Catch Phrase Clone “Guess The Phrase” Available For WP7 for Free

Catch Phrase is popular party game so it’s great to have a version of it that’s available for Windows Phones and t’s from Herm’s Software so it’s a solid offering.

This game is guaranteed to make the dullest times come to life and be fun. It is a guessing game to play with other people. One person describes the phrase on the screen while others have to guess what it is.

In this game you can adjust several game settings:

- Round Duration between 45 or 90 seconds.

- Points needed to win the game.

- Which categories to use in the game.

- Display a visual timer to see how much time is left.

You may also select between three different game modes:

- The Classic Mode

- Like hot potato or Catch Phrase

- The Race Mode – Teams compete to get the most points until the buzzer goes off – Party Mode – Play anyway you like without any teams, scores, etc.

Portals 2D for Windows Phones is Great…and Free

Here’s a freebie that’s really a great game. It’s a simplified version of the game Portals called Portals 2D and it’s free for January. I’ve been playing it and it’s a ton of fun (but I am stuck on the current level so I need to hit it a bit longer to get through it – the board in the screenshot in fact if anyone wants to walk me through it). Anyway, the game has simple but very clean graphics and it’s very easy to control and maneuver in this puzzler. here’s the official description:

Thomas (the Tank Engine) Barney and Angelina Game Packs Comes To Windows Phones

If you have a child you have no choice but to deal with Thomas the Tank Engine. Now there’s an officially licensed game for Windows phones that appears to be identical to the iOS version – except the WP7 version is actually priced $1 cheaper.

Here’s the description from the iOS version (since the WP7 version stops after the first paragraph):

All aboard for the newest adventure on the Island of Sodor with 3 new games featuring Thomas and his friends. Start your little engineer on the right track with matching games, puzzles and mazes, guaranteed to entertain for hours.
