Slacker Gets Major Metro Overhaul for iPhone

February 13th, 2013 — 9:52am Posted by Doug Smith

Slacker just released a major overhaul to their user interface for iPhone and iPod that incorporates a lot of enhancements with swiping and better sharing to social media. The only downside is the new color scheme that they brought with it is the same as Windows Phone Metro blue instead of the harder edged black. Also they have changed their logo from the black and yellow trimmed to a red and white color that could and hopefully is temporary for the Valentines Day Hallmark Holiday tomorrow.
Check out the UI changes:

20130213-080956.jpg
As you can see Slacker has a fresh coat of baby blue metro paint which I don’t particularly care for but what I do like is the very cool live tile affects it has. Each tile, one at a time will flash an image to either a play list picture or image relating to the tile. It’s a little slow but very cool indeed. I would have also liked to see all tiles displaying related images instead of just one at a time. Slacker, we are used to sensory overload, let us see more material.
Now check out these very cool sharing changes!:

20130213-083450.jpg
You can now share a single song where you could not before by choice. In the old version of Slacker it would automatically share a predetermined selection from the settings. Now it can be done within the song selection which is really cool. I have never liked or set any app to auto share. I always make the choice to share anything individually. You can also email, text message, twitter, or Facebook favorite material.
20130213-083919.jpg
Swiping is also big now in the new Slacker UI. Like the iTunes Store, you can swipe across rows of content to quickly find what you want or scroll through your own saved music choices. This was already “sort of” implemented of the iPad but was hard to find and use.

20130213-083803.jpg

The new UI update to slacker is really fresh and easy to use. Again, I would have preferred some custom color options and not the metro baby blue color theme. The sharing feature has been something I have wanted for a long time and finding new content is even easier than before. With the new Slacker update only rolling out to iPhone and iPod, Slacker must have something really unique in store for us on the iPad. No word on the iPad refresh but they did go ahead and change the icon from the black and yellow trim to the red. We will keep you posted on any changes but in the mean time head on over to the iTunes Store and get your update or download Slacker and give it a try. I personally opt for the premium service for 10 bucks a month. I like being able to cache offline content to listen to while I travel and also the live radio stations and DJ’s make the experience more personal. Slacker also has an ad driven version for free as well as a mid level 5 dollar a month plan that isn’t as loaded as the premium version. Head over to Slacker for more information on their subscription plans.

Evasi0n Untethered Jailbreak Tool Released for iOS 6

February 4th, 2013 — 2:12pm Posted by Doug Smith

evasi0n-screen-shotAs we have been keeping you up to speed on, there is finally an Evasi0n Untethered Jailbreak Tool Released for iOS 6!  There was not a whole lot f hope until a well know group of developers came together and called themselves Evad3rs. Made up of  Pod2g, Pimskeks, Planetbeing and Musclenerd they got right to work and in a very short amount of time released a statement saying that they had several exploits identified that would allow them to release an untethered jailbreak to the general public. The only drawback waiting to jailbreak iphone 5 was for iOS 6.1 to be released by Apple to ensure that there was nothing added to the final version that was not in the beta developers versions that would stop the release. Now that iOS 6 is released and had record adoption Evad3rs have released Evasi0n!

The untethered jailbreak process is very easy but you need to be WARNED that you do so at your own risk and will void the warranty. Also, there apps like DIRECTV that will not work on a jailbroken device yet. There are other developers creating apps to fix this issue, but right now there are some apps that will not work on a jailbroken device. Just be warned and we are not responsible.

All you need to do is download the untethered jailbreak software from any one of long list of mirrors and then connect to iTunes with your sync/data cable. Make sure your passcode lock is turned off. Then open Evasi0n and hit the Jailbreak button on the right hand side of the screen. Allow it to finish, then hit the new jailbreak icon on your device to apply the jailbreak software. Once it completes the process you are going to have the Cydia icon and store open before your eyes! On another note, be sure not to run any other applications on your PC while you are jailbreaking your device. Allow everything to complete first.

There you have it! Untethered Jailbreak and Cydia are now yours!

Head on over to Evasi0n.com to download.

Apple Granted Trademark for Their Store Design

January 31st, 2013 — 12:11pm Posted by Doug Smith

Apple-Store-patent-1I am just going to report on this and keep my opinions to myself and let everyone slug it out in the comment section. Nearly three years ago Apple had applied for a patent for their store design which is very well known by now that utilizes a lot of glass in it’s store front. The request has finally been a approved by the US Patent & Trademark Office and reads that : “clear glass storefront surrounded by a paneled facade consisting of large, rectangular horizontal panels over the top of the glass front” are covered under the patent. Also covered are areas in the store where instructional classes are held. Other elements include multi-tiered shelving  along the side walls, oblong tables with stools at the back of the store. Not covered is "the walls, floors, lighting, and other fixtures appear in dotted lines and are not claimed as individual features of the mark; however, the placement of the various items are considered to be part of the overall mark."

Apparently Apple must have been pushing this not only because it is such a high priority for US Patent and Trademark Office to complete, but because they didn’t want to be outdone by Microsoft who was granted a similar patent in 2011 (Trademark registration 4036534)  “covers the design of “a retail store with four curved tabletops at the front and rear side walls and a rectangular band displaying changing video images on the walls.” The trademark covers stores selling computer equipment, phones, books, backpacks and novelty items.”  (source)

Seriously? Don’t we have better things to work on at the Patent Office?

Evad3rs Announce Evasi0n Untethered Jailbreak Tool

January 30th, 2013 — 11:24pm Posted by Doug Smith

iOS 6.1 was released earlier this week and was not met with the normal enthusiasm surrounding an OS update. Siri being able to purchase movie tickets from Fandango and better reporting on how Apples Map App is terrible just didn’t get many folks too enthusiastic. Sorry folks, and I am an Apple fan that daily drives the iPhone 5. The bit of good news that was surrounding the iOS 6.1 release was that it was all that was holding up the untethered jailbreak tool being released by new development group called evad3rs. The group is made up of veterans Pod2g, Pimskeks, Planetbeing and Musclenerd who have been working only a short time before making progress and announcing that they had finished an untethered jailbreak tool and as many as two more exploits that made them feel that future jailbreaks would come faster for new iOS releases. As of today, the evad3rs twitter feed read zero as we all waited for the big announcement. But at 6:30pm tonight they made their first tweet stating that the new tool for untethered Jailbreaking the iPhone 5 running iOS 6 and many other devices would be called evasi0n and released soon. As you can see in the screen shot below of the new website, we are really close to it’s public release. Stay tuned everyone and we will keep you updated.

iOS 6.1 is Released From Apple, Jailbreak to Follow.

January 28th, 2013 — 9:40pm Posted by Doug Smith

The wait is finally over folks! Apple has begun rolling out OS update 6.1 that is available now over the air by going through your settings of your device. Of course plugging in to iTunes would work too. But what is really cool about this Ho Hum release from Apple is not what the update contains, it is really about the Jailbreaking community finally getting an untethered Jailbreak for the new iPhone 5 running iOS 6.x. As a matter of fact, there are 22 devices that will be covered with this new Jailbreak exploit and possibly Apple TV latter on down the line.

The new iOS 6.1 update offers more carriers LTE support, order movie tickets through Fandango using Siri in the USA only, iTunes match customers can finally download a single song from iCloud, and there is a new button to reset the advertising identifier.

We’ll keep you posted on more about this update from Apple and the release of the untethered jailbreak.

Stay tuned folks!

The Biggest Tweet To Look For This Week

January 28th, 2013 — 12:21pm Posted by Doug Smith

evad3rs-twitterThe biggest Tweet to look for this week has got to be by the new jailbreak and developer group called evad3rs. As I mentioned last week, this new group made up of 4 well know jailbreak community members Pod2g, Pimskeks, Planetbeing and Musclenerd are confident that they have an untethered jailbreak solution ready to go and that it will in fact work on the upcoming Apple iOS 6.1 OS update when they release it. They have been waiting because it is entirely possible that there be something different in the final build that was not in the first 4 developers builds that were sent out by Apple.

On Friday however, something interesting happened which was Apple sending out another build to the developers but this one is different and looks very much like a final build.  This build did not require developers registration  to activate and has no ReleaseType Lockdown keys.  This could mean that Apple could drop iOS 6.1 update this week and with it the untethered jailbreak as well from evad3rs! Good news indeed, but it gets better. This untethered jailbreak solution is said to be compatible with 22 Apple devices ranging from  iPads, iPhones, and iPods. Apple TV  2 is not quite ready yet but if Apple releases the update for that as well it will soon be included.

The last bit of good news is that with the eminent jailbreak for iOS 6.x, there are at least two more exploit’s discovered that the development team feels will make future jailbreaks happen a lot sooner.

So the biggest tweet to look for this week has got to be coming from @evad3rs as they end the long wait for an untethered jailbreak for the iPhone 5 running iOS 6! Follow @Pod2g, @Pimskeks, @Planetbeing and of course @Musclenerd to keep up with all the latest jailbreak news or just follow @MobilityDigest!

Apple Rumors On Next iPad 5, iPhone 5S, and IPad Mini 2

January 26th, 2013 — 3:10pm Posted by Doug Smith

Investors and analysts all start circling around Apples next new device because of how big business Apple is and they all want the inside information on production and what to expect in the next Apple device. This is good for us because being consumers and gadget geeks we are all excited to see what we can expect to stand in line for next on launch day.
To start off with Apple appears ready to launch a shiny new iPhone this June/July getting back on their summer release cycle and what it won’t be called is the iPhone 6. Instead it will be called the iPhone 5S and have a few hardware updates. Rumored is the camera getting a much needed overhaul. From the current 8 megapixel shooter it will go to a Sony 13 megapixel camera plus a flash update. It also appears certain that the processor will get a horsepower increase. Code names for the prototypes are said to be called the N51 and N53.
There is only a code name for the full size 10 inch iPad 5 circulating which is J72. But it is the rumors on the second version of the iPad Mini that are getting juicy as it is said to have a code name of J85 and is slated to make its retail presence known in October with the iPad 5 just in time for Christmas. The mini, which is a sure bet to have a retina screen added could also see some more bulk added like it’s big brother the iPad 2 did when it got fitted for a retina display and became the iPad 3.
I personally passed on the iPad 4 not seeing a major reason to upgrade from my iPad 3 which has some retina screen goodness and does everything I need it to do. I did upgrade from my iPhone 4S to the 5 because of the screen size but ended up kicking myself because of the camera issues I have with the 5. So for me it looks like I will be in line for the iPhone 5S for sure to get in on some Sony camera love, but unless something really spectacular with the iPad 5 happens I will again be holding back. Processor speed for me is a non issue and no reason to upgrade. Apples OS, as outdated as it is, still is very optimized and I rarely have issues like my Android phone sometimes has. So until iOS 7 gets released and possibly has some feature not compatible with older devices, there does not look like a real need for me to stand in the Fruit line this year.
