YouTube recently made some unannounced changes that broke YouTube support in some of Kinoma’s products.

Happily, updates for the affected products are available right now! They’re so easy to get that you’ll be YouTubing again in minutes. Here’s how…

How to update Kinoma FreePlay

To update immediately, go to Kinoma FreePlay’s main screen, show the menu pod and select Player > Check for Updates. Otherwise, you’ll be notified about the update automatically.

How to update Kinoma Player 4 EX and Kinoma Player 4

If your Palm smartphone or handheld has an internet connection, just choose Check for updates from the Media menu. Otherwise, you can update from your PC.

1,800+ FORA.tv videos now available on demand with Kinoma Play

FORA.tv is an enormous treasure of video on the people, issues and ideas that are changing the world.

Today, we’re glad to share that you can now use Kinoma Play on your phone to watch over 1,800 FORA.tv videos on demand.

“Fora” is the Latin plural of “forum”, and in that spirit Kinoma Play’s FORA.tv channel features “you are there” videos about the day’s most important technological, science,business, and cultural issues — all gathered from leading thinkers, institutions and conferences.

Kinoma Guide’s SKY.fm category is a great collection of streaming radio stations. There’s lots of genres, and yet the refined selection makes it easy to find the kind of music you’re in the mood for.

We’ve just released a new Kinoma Guide update that adds all currently-available SKY.fmand DI.fm (Digitally Imported) stations in all available stream formats — including aacPlus.

aacPlus?

AAC is the standards-based successor to MP3. It offers far higher-quality than MP3 at similar bitrates.

Kinoma Play is the only mobile player that supports not just AAC, but also the even more-advanced aacPlus and aacPlus v2 (a.k.a. HE-AAC and HE-AAC v2) formats.

The SKY.fm streams are available in both MP3 and aacPlus formats. Even though the aacPlus streams are 75% smaller (!) than the 96 kbps MP3 streams, they still sound great. Such a low-bitrate stream makes for great reliability, even in very poor network conditions.

40 years ago today, Monty Python’s Flying Circus was first broadcast on the BBC. For four seasons and 45 episodes, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin and Graham Chapman created some of the smartest/dumbest humor of their time.

(Of course, we all know it ended tragically on an ill-advised Amazon river cruise in early 1975, when the Amazonian llama population was at a peak. John Cleese’s heroic warning — “Look out, there are llamas!” — didn’t come soon enough to allow the troupe to escape with their lives, and possibly go on and do movies or something.)

Kinoma Play update: Twitter location (and more!)

Here’s what’s new and improved…

Twitter

Kinoma Play’s Twitter app is now location aware. A new Set Location command in the Profile tab lets you enter a location, or use your phone’s GPS to choose your location from a list. A list of recent locations makes it super-quick to update your location.

Plus, a new Nearby search (GPS required) shows you nearby news, views and gossip. Who needs a watercooler when you’ve got Kinoma Play?

Plus:

If a message contains links to a YouTube video or Flickr image, Kinoma Play now opens them directly in its YouTube and Flickr apps rather than launching a web browser. It’s much faster, and (unlike a web browser) always works.
The Twitter app now shows the source (web, Kinoma Play, API, etc.) of individual tweets.

Start

Start now has separate tabs for Applications and Settings, making it easier to find and launch both.

Other fixes and improvements

Flights time zone conversions are now more reliable.
Although Kinoma Play is incredibly compact and efficient — only 7 MB of RAM, compare to iTunes’ 125 MB on Windows! — we still add optimizations to nearly every release. For this release, we focused on improved behavior in low memory situations.
We hired a thousands monkeys to stomp on a thousand phones running Kinoma Play for a thousand hours, to see if random and unexpected input could crash it. We found that a few especially-clever monkeys could crash Kinoma Play this way, so we added safeguards to prevent that.
Okay, that last item includes a small exaggeration.Instead of using monkeys, we actually used a selection of low-level testing utilities. But we really did add the safeguards.
Thumbnails now appear faster and look a little better. (Yes, both speed and quality are improved. )

New Kinoma Play update: Yelp, Google Reader and Flights apps

Another week, another free update for Kinoma Play customers. How do we do it?Magical elves. It turns out Kinoma Play is what they do when they’re not making Christmas!

Yelp

The easiest way to find the best local businesses — everything from restaurants to dentists to mechanics and lots more — is now built right into Kinoma Play.

Fun fact: Yelp is Kinoma Play’s first location-aware app! If your phone supports GPS, just choose Nearby to find everything near you, or check “Use GPS Location” when you Search. In another first, Yelp is the first Kinoma Play app to feature tap-to-dial. Once you find the business you can call it, map it and even share it via SMS and email.

A full feature focus article on Yelp is coming soon. Until then, don’t let that stop you from diving in and enjoying Yelp today.

Google Reader

Recently we introduced a great feed reader app called News to Kinoma Play. A great addition to be sure, but then we heard from Google Reader users who wanted to play, too.

Google Reader users, your wish is granted. Not only can you able to read your subscriptions (including Starred and Shared items), but the Search command uses Google Blog Search to let you search the content of all blogs (vs. just blogs you’ve subscribed to)!

Following in Google’s footsteps, we’ve labeled this first release a “beta” so that we can get it to you ASAP. If you use Google Reader with Kinoma Play, please let us know what you think.

Flights

The new Flights app lets you search for flights and review U.S. airport delays. It couldn’t be simpler:

Once you find your flight, you can see its departure and arrival information. Then with a touch, you can share that via SMS and/or email, or choose Track Flight to add it to the main Flights screen.
