With my kids now on the computer it seems like as much as me these days I do wonder what they are doing on them all the time. Pre-Teens and Facebook scares the crap out of me as well as them always clicking on ads and mucking up their computer. I know I can set up parental controls and everything but they are using the CR-48 so at the moment not too worried about them busting that one.

This software will allow you to watch and control your kids computer from anywhere. The price seems kinda high when I could just RDP into it (when they are not using the CR-48). But I am sure there will be parents who will want to give this a shot.

Touchpad getting closer to Android port

The Touchpad is getting closer to an android port from the CyanogenMod team. So far they have demoed a working version that includes multi-touch driver support, 3D gaming and in the video below they are demonstrating the ACME tool (another CyanogenMod experimental installer).

Watch Any Video on Your Mobile Device with Splashtop

So after waiting in line for hours to get my touchpad for $150 I was a little bit disappointed with the app selection webOS offered. Sure the OS is intuitive and quick (after preware tweeks) but that doesn’t go very far if you can’t use the device how you want.

Enter Splashtop

In what may have been fueled by the fire sale of the touchpad, Splashtop ported their software over to webOS. Splashtop is a remote desktop client to control your PC from a mobile device. Great video quality is what sets it apart from its competitors. So this means you can watch anything on your device that you could on your PC like Hulu, Netflix, and recorded Windows Media Center files. Like most VNC or remote desktop clients, you will need to download and install the streamer (server) on every computer that you would like to control. Setup is breeze and it works over 3G, though not as well. See the demo of Netflix running on a touchpad below.

GczII Geocaching Software Updated to version .2.35.76 (7/1)

New Version of NICQUE's popular freeware program, GCzII is released

NICQUE, the popular author of Windows Mobile freeware released a brand new version of GczII on July 1st (version “0.2.35.76”). GczII is a popular freeware Geocaching.com client, where you can search for geocaches by Zipcode, cache name, author’s name, trackables, and of course geographical distance from your current GPS location. For those of you not familiar, Geocaching is a sport which (after registering for a free account on their website) allows you access to the coordinates for thousands and thousands of geocaches worldwide. Each geocache is a container hidden somewhere in public which can be located with the coordinates provided for it on Geocaching.com, which can get you around 10-30 feet from the “cache” (from there, GPS is too imprecise and you must use your wits to find the spoils). When you get to the cache (these can be in parks, parking lots, off a hiking trail, etc.), you can sign the logbook and if the cache is physically large enough (the size of the cache varies wildly – usually a small plastic box though), exchange small trinkets. When you get home, you also sign the log on the site.

GczII saves the user the hassle of not only needing to have a separate GPS receiver, but you also do not have to print off countless cache pages or worry about typing the coordinates just perfectly into a secondary receiver. It is a “green” solution, and also much easier.

Panoramic Software Continues to Show Some Love for Windows Mobile

Most people have probably moved on from windows mobile, or are planning to relatively soon. Even if you’re a diehard like me, it’s not hard to see that the big boy developers have left us high and dry. If you’ve been waiting for that update from SPB Warehouse or SK Software for one of your favorite programs, you probably know by now that it ain’t happening. Some developers may even want to charge you for an update that will never come (*cough*cough-make sure you don’t have the auto-update option checked on any of your programs from Resco). But there is one commercial developer out there that I know of who hasn’t completely abandoned the winmo faithful: Panoramic Software. This week, they released two updates (one pretty big, and one a quick bug-fix) for their venerable Motweets software. The latest version is 2.1.1. It is available in a paid version and an ad-supported version (get the paid version; it’s just $3.99). This is the third or fourth update for winmo in the last year, as I recall. During that span, I don’t believe that any of the other commercial programs I use have gotten any updates at all (including a couple others from Panoramic).

Bounty offered for a WP7 Tasks/ToDo App

Ok, so I have spent the past two days playing with my new Surround and learning everything I can about it. Really not too much to figure out but I like to immerse myself in new things. The beauty of WP is that there is really very little you can do or change to personalize the phone. Microsoft has already done most of the heavy lifting. Downloaded about 40 apps/games so far and aside from a couple app solutions I am still looking into I am just about ready to power down my Tilt2 for the last time.

The one thing that is holding me back is the lack of a good Task/ToDo app for my phone. Microsoft chose to skip over this important functionality for reasons I will never know, even though Windows Live does have something called ToDo’s. I have tried the 5 or 6 Task apps available on the Marketplace, and am currently trialing one and testing another, but they all do about the same thing and lack critical functionality. As I am already using a 3rd party app with a live tile (Weatherbug) and saw at least one other app that included alerts/alarms, I am hoping that my request for a good Task/ToDo app can be fulfilled.

What I am looking for on a Task/ToDo app:

Task subject – (already implemented)
Due Date – (already implement nicely)
Due Time – (optional, but already implemented)
Description – (already implemented)
Category – (optional, but already implemented)
Priority, like 1,2 3 – (optional)
Sorting by Due Date / Priority – (required)
Past Due Change Status (to red) – (required)
Completed Toggle – (already implemented)
Reminder Alert – Day/Time (required – not yet implemented)
Recurrence Function – (required – not yet implemented)
Live Tile w/ # Due & # Past Due (in red), like Tasks 2 / 1 – (required – not yet implemented)
Any other bells or whistles
No syncing w/ Outlook / Windows Live required, but that would be really slick

My current workaround is to set an alarm to remind me to check the Task app at a certain time each day. I can get by without recurrence by resetting the task once completed. Sloppy but it works. I can sometimes go several days without needing to check Tasks, so a forced check is like crying wolf. It gets old fast. I sometimes set tasks a month or two out and can’t possibly remember them all. I don’t want to clutter up my calendar with tasks, and what happens when I don’t complete them on the scheduled appointment date (vanishing task).

So, I have a crisp $50 US for the first Task/ToDo app that meets the above required specifications. And if it looks/works really well, expect a bonus. Anyone want to add to the bounty or maybe there is a developer out there with some free time. I am going to double post this thread in our Forums (Windows Phone /Software) to give the offer as much exposure as possible. Happy hunting.

Ilium Software’s eWallet coming to WP7

Apps come and go, but for me, there has always been one that I could not live without, eWallet by Ilium Software. The eWallet app keeps everything I need to know 256 bit encrypted and right where I an get to it quickly. Not only is the mobile app excellent, the Professional version allows you to sync with desktop software every bit as handy as the mobile app. I use it almost daily to remember passwords, serial numbers, and a ton of other things I cannot seem to ever remember. I even have my Furnace Filter dimensions in there because I can never seem to remember it!

This is great news and I cannot wait to try this out when WP7 is released!

eWallet for Windows Phone 7

With the official Windows Phone 7 announcement going out yesterday, I wanted to let you know that we’re working on a version of eWallet for Microsoft’s new mobile OS! eWallet for Windows Phone 7 is designed to perfectly fit the look and feel of the new OS. It takes the best features of eWallet and adapts them to Window Phone 7’s unique interface.

If you’ve gotten your hands on a Windows Phone 7 device, you know that Microsoft has created a really compelling OS. I know a lot of people had their doubts, but I have to say that Microsoft pulled out all the stops on this. The end results are devices that are really exciting to design software for.

Unfortunately, I can’t offer much more at this stage – you’ll have to wait for the official release for that – but I did include a screenshot below to give you a little hint of what we’re working on!

BB Desktop Software Update – Rants

Well I got myself a new Blackberry from work. Went from a 8330 to a 8530. I know way behind the times here at this place. So now I can start a rant about RIM 2 ways. First, they make all of my cables from the 8330 useless with the 8530. Seems very Apple-esque. Second. Start up my Blackberry Desktop Software and it asks me to update it. I say yes and now next rant begins. Just like iTunes you download the whole thing and then wait FOREVER for the damn thing to install. Still waiting for it to install.
