Since its inception, Smooth YouTube Downloader has helped the prolific community of Windows Mobile device holders around the world to download YouTube videos to their device’s more reliable onboard storage or media card without having to worry about data speeds, network coverage, or WEP keys. While ironically many companies are trying to move our “personal belongings” to overloaded “cloud servers” in the sky that require constant and reliable network access, having your files with you reduces the wait and saves precious battery life, not to mention the bandwidth that would’ve been otherwise wasted (which isn’t a good thing in this day and age with so many carriers charging massive costs for extremely small amounts of data). Smooth YouTube downloader comes with a nifty skin and allows you to pick the desired resolution for your download from QVGA size FLV files to WXGA size MP4s and everything inbetween. The program itself supports many common device resolutions too from QVGA to WVGA so that more Windows Mobile enthusiasts can enjoy the software, thanks to Zorc.

I love getting little accessories for my phone that add functionality, and the one I’ve got for review today does just that, it adds a lot of functionality actually to your HTC phone. I’ve got an AT&T Tilt or HTC TyTn II that I use for many things besides making phone calls. A long time ago it replaced my MP3 player, I use my Tilt instead of carrying a separate music device most times that I want to carry a bare minimum of stuff with me, and it works very well. One thing though is that when you need to either get official HTC headphones with the USB jack or get an adapter, then that usually only gives you the sound of the music and not much else, i.e. no control over the music and you can’t answer calls either.

Today for review I’ve got the OEM HTC Headsfree with MP3 Remote Controller Adapter, yeah it’s a mouthful but it does a lot of stuff for you. It’s not only a USB adapter to 3.5mm jack that can control your music but it also allows you to take calls though your headphones. It features an inline remote with several functions, it’s got a built-in clip as well to keep it handy, and a nice long cord, but the best part is that it’s inexpensive coming in at $14.99 shipped to your door anywhere in the world. So read on to check it out..

This came from USBFever.com for review, they graciously provided it to me so I can share it with our readers..

Here’s the specs:

Ok, no special packaging, just a bag, cuts down on costs and waste..

Inside the bag is the adapter of course:

The product is basically a small in-line controller and a USB to 3.5mm adapter in one. It does include a clip so you can clip it to your shirt or wherever.

On the side is a tiny hole, that’s the microphone, yes you can talk on the phone with this, and you calls are in stereo… not sure if I want to hear some people in stereo though….

On the end or top is the 3.5mm jack:

The front face is the controls for forward, back, volume, play/pause, answer call and hang up. Forward and back along with volume are labeled. In the center is a small raised dot that looks like a ball, that’s the play/pause button, on the sides of the dot are two symbols that look like brackets [ ] those are for answering and ending calls.

As I said I’ve got a Tilt, so that what I used this product with to listen to some music through the HTC Audio Manager:

The cord is nice and long, but not too long, adding the headphones makes it very long, but it’s more than long enough to reach the collar of your shirt while your phone is on your hip, that way you have easy access to the controls and the microphone is near your mouth for taking calls.

I used the adapter with my Atrio M5 earbuds so of course everything sounded excellent, the quality of the sound you’ll get depends on the headphones you use, and the Atrio M5s are some of the best on the market… anyway, for me the sound was perfectly fine.

The adapter worked perfectly for me with no problems, the buttons responded instantly with no lag.

I also found that when not on a call you can use the answer call button to take you to the phone dialer to make a call and the end call button will take you back to your home screen but leave the music playing.

The microphone seemed fine during calls, I had no complaints from the people I talked to while using it. It does need to be fairly close to your mouth for good call quality, but that’s expected.

For what it is the OEM HTC Headsfree with MP3 Remote Controller Adapter is a great little product and you can’t beat the price.

Pros:

+Multi-functional

+Works perfectly

+Inexpensive

+Handy and useful

Cons:

-None

What are widgets you ask? Well widgets are basically a stripped down version of the Pocket Internet Explorer application that is running a mobile version of a web site. Now what widgets are there available you ask?

Well currently there are widgets for:

This is all brought to you by emaster101 at PPCGeeks. It’s a great idea if you want one button access to certain mobile sites. This way you don’t have to fumble through your favorites folders for the sites that you frequent a lot like Facebook cough cough Doug!

I have been pretty obsessed over the Touch Pro II version of Touch Flo 3D. I have always been a huge fan of TF3D. But I have been watching the releases of the Windows Mobile 6.5 ROMS being ported to the Raphael and the Kaiser with a lot of interest. I am not quite sure of the user interface myself, but this is a very stable ROM and REALLY Fast. See for yourself in this video. (Flip your laptop or monitor over on it’s side your you are probably going to get a sore neck, the video is sideways!)

This ROM uses HARD SPL 3.56, which has been a long time since I used. So be careful and make sure you READ the whole thread prior to flashing! The ROM Chef advises flashing from a Storage card which I also highly advise for any ROM flashing. It is quicker and easier, and a WHOLE lot safer. Download the file RUU_signed.nbh and then RENAME it to KAISIMG.nbh. DO NOT MISPELL it either.

Head on over to XDA-Developers to get in on the WinMo 6.5 Goodness for your Kaiser (Tilt/TyTN II) or click here.

You can also head on over to our forums where we are discussion it by clicking here

Thanks for the heads up by david2327!

Our phones are usually much more than just for making calls, especially phones like the HTC TyTn II or the Tilt. These smartphones can be our mobiles offices that allow us to always keep in touch and know what’s going on. These are great phones, there’s no doubt about that, the one downfall to them is their price, they’re usually very expensive, and most of us are locked into contracts, so if something happens to the phone we’re probably out of luck. So the thing to do is get a case for them to make sure they’re protected, but not just any case will do, at least for me, I’m particular, I want a case that will offer me the most protection for my phone, but yet the ease of access I need. Today for review I’ve got a Flip Style case from Proporta that will fit either the HTC TyTn II or the AT&T Tilt, this case is leather and well made, the leather will offer good protection for your phone, but there’s a bonus aluminum plate in the top cover section for even better protection for the screen of yourphone.

So continue on to learn more…

Inside we find a plastic tray with the case, belt clip and adapter.

The phone comes packaged with a piece of styrofoam inside of it to make sure it keeps it’s shape. The case is leather and when you open the box you’ll smell it, personally I like the smell of leather… On the front is a small Proporta logo, and it’s where the clip attaches. On the back is a small screw that can be removed to use the belt clip, you’ll need to attach the round clip to the case, then the belt clip to that.

This case is the type that opens downward so you’ve got the flap hanging down as you talk, not something I prefer, I’ve been using a Krusell case for about a year now, and it’s similar to this but it flips up and over the back while talking.

The front flip cover actually has an aluminum plate inside of it to help protect your phone, inside we can also see the Proporta web address engraved into the plate.

The other side of the case is where you would put your phone, there is a small clip on top, and a clear covering that goes over your keyboard. This covering not only protects the keyboard but also holds your phone in the case.

It does take a bit of work to get your phone in the case, but that’s a good thing as it’s a nice tight fit, but I would recommend powering off your phone during installation as you will hit the buttons. When your phone is in the case you’ve basically got full access to all of the buttons and ports, the sides are really fully open, which is very nice.

On the back of the case is a cutout for the camera so you can still take pictures while it’s in the case.

When you want to use the keyboard, you’ll have full access, though it does take a bit to get accustomed to the clear covering for typing, but after a while it’s not a problem.

Here’s a couple pictures of the belt clip attachment:

I like this type of clip because you can leave the clip on your belt, you just push the button on the top to release the phone, and then just re-clip when finished talking, it’s very nice feature.

Overall the Proporta Leather Flip Style case is nice, the only complaint I have is the flip part, it flips down, but I think that’s more of a personal thing for me as the case I’ve been using for many months flips the other way so this just feels awkward for me.

The aluminum plate in the cover is a nice touch, it doesn’t really add any weight to the case, but it adds a lot of protection.

It’s nicely made with nice thick stitching so it should hold together for a quite some time.

If I had to give it a score it would be a 4 1/2 out of 5.

Well look what we have on today’s menu… My Phone by Microsoft. This is a alternative syncing application that Microsoft has developed. The idea is that you have online access to files that have been synced from your current mobile device. So let’s say that you update your phone (anything with a Tegra chip will do) then you can now restore all of these precious pieces of data onto the new device. What precious pieces of data you ask… follow after the break.

So here is a screen shot from my Tilt. (Ok stop laughing, I’ll be getting a new device soon.) This is the options screen that shows you what you can sync. Notice that if you are synced to an Exchange server like myself, you will not be able to sync: Contacts, Calendar or Tasks.

Now a view of the your Home Page for My Phone…

Here’s a look at the Photos section…

Now pretty much every content section follows this page pattern. You can see all of your files that are in the directory and whichever one you have selected you have a couple of actions to take on the file: Download, Archive to Web, and Delete. (located on the far right of the window)

Example of the Music directory…

Now I now I’m not showing all of the different sections, but they are all structured the same.

Ok this is the point that I put in my 1 cent (hey bad economy). I think this is a great idea whether you use ActiveSync or not. As you can see it’s a nice PIM backup for all of your personal data. I for one don’t usually back up my Text messages, but it is a nice idea. So if your looking for another back up option for your mobile device and have web access to those files, then give this app a look. If you need a hand holding walk through on how to set up then take a look here.
