It’s Your Fault We Have All These iPhone 5 Rumors
Every day we hear a dozen new (and conflicting) iPhone 5 rumors: the screen size will be 4” or the same; it’s revolutionary or a just a speed bump increment; it’s release date is October __ or it was released yesterday. There’s no end to the degree to which these rumors come and the fact that the same site will post inconsistent rumors just days apart is no accident. The source for these posts are almost always the same – unnamed sources, somewhere in the supply chain but often linked to an analyst. In other words, these sources are anonymous and unknown and the rumors are unsubstantiated.
So why are they so widely reported and talked about? Because it doesn’t matter how ridiculous or inconsistent or incoherent the rumor is – you keep reading them. Each time you click the link and you read it like a lemming. You continue to support these sites twice a day as they revamp their rumor with more rumors about their rumors.
These types of posts lead to a ton of hits. You read them all. I mean seriously, at this point it’s fool me 250 times, shame on me. Yet you keep doing it and the sites that perpetuate these rumors keep collecting off of it and as long as you click those links, expect a lot more to come.
We know almost nothing about the iPhone 5 – not even the name. You get that right? Some portion of these rumors will be true. That’s called a coincidence. Throw enough darts at the board and some hit, right?

You hit the nail on the head with this one. I too am so over the iRumors. People have become sheep following these rumors one after another. Will the iPhone5 or whatever it’s called be good? Yes that’s quite possible but I highly doubt it will be nearly as grand as the rumors, the device will surely be playing catch up with the current market.
I thank apple for releasing the iPhone as it changed the playing field for smartphones in the best way but now their rein at the top has run out of steam…..besides the flocks of sheep that love everything with an ‘i’ in front of it, consumers have many good alternatives
Oh and please ignore the fact that my previous post was done from a iPad, iTotally was too lazy to grab my windows laptop while laying down. Besides wouldn’t you use a device given to you for free?
I second the thanks to Apple for changing the Smart phone landscape.
Remember when they were called pocket pc, or palm pilot. Nobody had one, well I did, and one other guy I knew and his wife. We got our apps for free at getjar and some times xda.
Now everybody has their hand in the pie, and if you don’t have the right device, you suck!
I have to pay out the ass for apps, or be sent on a massive guilt trip about supporting the developers. I thought they were hobbiests and now we turned their fun into a job. I don’t know about you but, that’s a great way to kill a hobby.
I could care less about the new IPhone. It is not for me, and not much would change that.
I read here, and atleast 6 other sites,for all types of mobility info, I am a junkie, feed my fix.
Some times I am compelled to respond to what I read.
I expected that you would talk about how we read your blogs and that would drive your writing topics. We are just reading what you all give us, by your logic we couldn’t care less about sexy girls cause we are reading about cell phones etc…I call it baiting with headlines.
Don’t feel bad, everyone does it. It is my fault for wanting to read about tech instead of just looking for more pics of sexy girls to clog my memory cards.

Precisely the same argument is applicable to terrorism threat warnings, if not more so.
Brilliant post David K, leading in traffic today and because of how you finessed it, keeping your integrity intact while still nailing that SEO for me, better than average bounce rate and well above most iPhone articles with exception to Smith’s piece which has dried up.
On the other hand, maybe Google is working on some algorithm to differentiate the iPhone rumor articles from the iPhone rumor article hate articles. We’ll see.

I don’t know why people complain so much about iPhone rumor posts. The iPhone is the single best selling smartphone on the market. Period. Anyone who says ‘their reign at the top is over’ clearly doesn’t have a good understanding of marketshare vs profit share. There’s one fact you can take to bed every single night: more people buy an iPhone than ANY OTHER smartphone on the market. Yes, Android based phones have a bigger market share, but do any of them come close to selling as many units as the iPhone (which has only 4 models since 2007, the iPhone, 3G, 3GS, and the iPhone 4)?
Nope.
So this makes anything new about the iPhone very interesting to a great number of people. Just because you’re an Android fan or singleminded MS fanboy doesn’t mean that iPhone news isn’t important. Rumors do suck because anyone can come up with one, but to be fair, there have been some very accurate rumors from reliable sources in the past, and to be honest, I can’t wait for the iPhone 5 and iOS 5 to come out. I’ve got my cash ready to go and will be upgrading on day one.
