HTC 7 Trophy For WP7 Photographed

September 21st, 2010 — 9:31pm written by David K

imageSo this is what they’re calling the ‘7 Trophy’ but it may be an HD7. Heck call it what you want, it’s a black slab and that’s all I want. No real details here except that the USB slot is on the side which is interesting and it shows as 7.2GB of total storage and the OS version matches the version that the dev devices were upgraded to recently.

HTC Posts Official Desire HD And Sense Vid – Put On A Diaper Before Watching

September 21st, 2010 — 8:00pm written by David K

I know promo videos can do all sorts of things (like make Symbian look like a good OS) but if you have any interest in HTC Android devices, or the new HTC Sense or the HTC Desire HD check out this video and make sure you set it to 720HD and have the volume on. I’m not into Android (WP7 FTW) but this is pretty slick stuff:

No idea why HTC isn’t its own OS at this point considering they’re doing to Android what they did to WM and making it theirs by creating a custom UI that’s layers deep and adding custom apps all over the place.

  • Doug Smith: This is really a cool device. An almost identical twin to my HD2!

Android Twitter App Twidroyd Lets You Preview Content Within The App

September 21st, 2010 — 7:51pm written by David K

imageTwidroyd is a Twitter app for Android that seems to have gotten a ton of positive press from a lot of sources. And today version 4 was let out the door and it’s impressive. Maybe because it seems to cram a lot of the iPad features onto a (relatively) tiny Android screen. Take a look at the embedded image. That’s called LivePreview and it lets you see media (photos, videos or web pages) within the app without losing your Twitter feed. Some notes from the developer:

The free version is a fully featured Twitter client, including postings, mentions, direct messages with threaded view, integrated search, list viewing, URL shortening, geo-location support, multi-language interface, background notifications and more. A Pro version is available for $3.99 and adds multi-account support, full list support, three desktop widgets for viewing tweets on the device’s home screen, native bit.ly support and other advanced features. Both also fully integrate Twitlonger for tweets containing more than 140 characters, and plixi, for embedding photos within tweets. In addition to downloading Twidroyd 4 at the Android marketplace, Android users can also text TWIDROYD to 95997 on their phones to receive the download link directly. Android OS version 1.5 or higher is required for all features except LivePreview, which requires version 2.0 or higher.

That’s not the only change to the version (the complete changelog is here). but I think that, in and of itself, is enough of a reason to try it out if you Tweet from Android. If you test it out share your thoughts.

Rocket 21 Blackjack Styled Card Game Previewed For Windows Phone 7

September 21st, 2010 — 7:37pm written by David K

imageRocket21 is a pretty neat take on the classic game of Blackjack. Here, you’re challenged to play 4 hands at once and try to get a Blackjack on each hand all while against the clock. If you need to skip a card or go over 21 you lose points. If you get enough points you can advance through the levels, and it appears to work through a deck of cards at a time (at least on the levels shown) so it’s not just a randomly pulled card but you can bring your Blackjack tricks to the table here and count cards. Here it is in action:

Well played…

Blackberry Resets Its OS – A Wise Move At The Right Time

September 21st, 2010 — 7:25pm written by David K

imageBy now you may have heard that the WSJ is reporting that RIM is introducing a new operating system to use on their upcoming tablet, which may even launch 4th Q of this year. The new OS is based on a core designed by QNX Software Systems. Who are these guys? They build an OS to use on industrial products (like nuclear reactors) and according to them it’s designed in a way that it cannot fail. See, where other OSes are a large system with lots of parts, QNX opts for a lot of mini-tasks with the idea being that the OS cannot fail and if any portion of the OS fails then that singular portion can reset itself without bringing down the core and this applies to drivers, protocols, apps and file systems. It’s also allegedly a small and light OS. Let’s keep in mind that this is not a GUI. In other words, this is just a core and not what you’ll see in the shell the user interacts with. So there’s the background behind where this is headed.

Putting what’s going on behind the scenes, this means that Blackberry OS 6 may be the last version of that OS. So, yeah, just like Windows Mobile 6.5 (6 must be unlucky in OS world). This is a full reset and there is not expected to be backwards compatibility. But don’t think a new OS can’t be done. See Windows Phone 7, Android (only 2 years old), Maemo heck even iOS is only 3 years old. And as we know the mobile markets are set to explode over the coming years so there’s room for all platforms to grow. Blackberry also doesn’t have too much to lose in terms of leaving behind a marketplace or apps since that’s always something they’ve struggled with. And it’s clearly time for them to compete in a world where people expect something more than a simple email device with BBM and you need an OS that you can move to larger platforms (like tablets) if you want to develop an ecosystem. Also, the infamous fragmentation doesn’t apply too much to Blackberry because of the lack of apps and RIM controls the hardware and software so they ensure basic OS compatibility. And they were able to pull this off without announcing a new OS, telling developers and consumers to stay away from their products and then wait 8 months to release the thing (yeah MS I’m looking at you). With that said, if they forget that their core users are people seeking fast and easy email and BBM without a fuss then they can do positive harm.

We’re looking at some interesting years in the mobile world. I’ll say that much. What do you guys think? Round of applause to RIM for reading the writing on the walls or is the industry too cramped already?

A Beanstalk Tale – Full Ported to Windows Phone 7

September 21st, 2010 — 3:27pm written by David K

imageDinoGames has completed porting A Beanstalk Tale which we first mentioned two months ago when we noted:

It’s a Doodle jump type game but really has some impressive graphics and the game play looks solid. The developer notes that the game features 11 enemies, 3 bosses that change their behavior, 90 awards to get, detailed statistics, tons of pickups, different platforms and much more.

Well now it’s fully ported from ZuneHD and ready for launch when Windows Phone 7 is launched. Here it is in action on an actual device and looking sharp as hell:

Very very nice work.

imagePyramidz is available for the iPhone and iPad and it’s now announced to be coming to Windows Phone 7. It’s Bejeweled style but you swipe and that causes the blocks on the sides (or top/bottom) to rotate around. Looks like incredible (and fast) game play. Here’s the descirption:

The principle is simple: drag the lines to make combinations of at least 3 identical squares, earn bonus and make the maximum of points!

roboPrint–Printing Solution For Windows Phone 7 Enters Beta

September 21st, 2010 — 1:04pm written by David K

imageWe had previously posted some still shots of roboPrint for Windows Phone 7 and now that the app has moved to beta there’s video of it available. To remind you, roboPrint lets you print from your Windows Phone 7 device and one of the great features you can see in the video is connecting to a Gmail account, downloading an attachment and printing it. They describe the app as":

A full featured printing application that will allow users to print from 3G or WiFi to any network connected printer, anywhere in the world. Print your emails, web pages, documents, whatever, wherever.

You can see it in action and realize how valuable of a tool this can be for wireless printing wherever you go.

I’m not sure if MS has a Bluetooth printing profile for WP7, but I don’t think it matters much anymore.

Get Your Chan On with Chandroid

September 21st, 2010 — 11:20am written by Doug Simmons

chandroid_ss By now you’re probably wondering where I get all these sweet article images from, right? Chandroid. It’s an Android client/front-end that lets you cruise through your imageboard (aka chan) sites of interest much more effectively than doing it with the browser and post to the boards as well with good camera integration (if that’s your thing). Sets you back $1, but one of the better one dollars I’ve ever spent. Because the average channer’s interest lie predominantly in nsfw arenas, mature audiences and also very immature audiences alike (though also stand-up guys like myself who have a weird thing for cute animals) I mustn’t name any chans here but here’s a big list to get you started.

It’s good for offline browsing. Really good. I fire the thing up to my chan of interest when I’m heading toward the subway, it downloads all the posts on the given board including the images leaving me fully entertained throughout my no-signal ride and I’ll maybe even miss a stop or two. In the event of that and running out of cached chan content I’ll just hop over to NewsRob and repair my brain with normal information as I backtrack a couple stops. Chandroid lets you save individual images either for posterity or to share as I just did for this article and it can archive entire threads for you too. Love animated gifs? Well that makes one of us, but a free plugin for that has you covered. Here’s your market link, /b/ro.

Big segue for you: Day four no cigarettes (that was our prenuptial agreement, my quitting cold turkey). Hey, about how long does it take to get used to wearing your wedding ring? And it didn’t rain by the way so I got the ‘56 Plymouth Belvedere for those of you following my personal life, wondering if I’m making this whole thing up:alt

HTC Sense HUB For Windows Phone 7 Detailed

September 21st, 2010 — 7:52am written by David K

imageSo we’ve seen plenty of video of the HTC HUB for Windows Phone 7 already, but here’s a list of the apps that it contains. To recap, this is a HUB which is merely a tile with apps within it and you can add more apps to the HUB. If you don’t like it, just unpin the tile. If you have a phone with extra applications pre-installed it just takes up a little bit of memory but since you have sandboxed storage it won’t bog your phone down like we’re used to in Windows Mobile World. OK here’s the app list from WMPowerUser:

Weather – we have all see this visually stunning app.
Calculator – a simple calculator in portrait and scientific calculator in landscape
Connection Setup – useful when roaming onto another network
Converter – a simple unit convertor
Flashlight – we know this one
List – a simple lists app.
Love – included in EVERY Windows Phone 7 device!
Notes – the visually stunning notes app.
Photo Enhancer – the ability to add simple effects to pictures
Sound Enhancer – enable SRS WOW or Dolby Mobile on your device.
Stocks – a nice stocks app.

There’s also an HTC Market (again, this is a market within the Market) that you can add more HTC apps to your phone from. Presumably you can also take the individual apps within the HUB and pin them independently to the home screen so you can pin weather and never look at love.
