Samsung Mobile Bringing Mobile Charging Stations to 20 U.S. Colleges and Universities to Help More Than 600 Thousand Students and Faculty Stay Connected for Free

Samsung Telecommunications America (Samsung Mobile), the No. 1 mobile phone provider in the U.S., today dedicated the first of more than 90 charging stations at 20 U.S. college campuses. By the end of this year, Samsung Mobile plans to install charging stations at 10 colleges including San Diego State University, The University of Colorado – Boulder, Texas Tech University, The University of Texas at Dallas, Northern Iowa University, The University of New Mexico, The University of Minnesota, Northwestern University, The University of Miami and Louisiana Tech. Samsung Mobile plans to place charging stations in 10 additional schools during the spring semester of 2010.

College students and faculty rely on their mobile devices everyday for communication, scheduling and research. Samsung Mobile is excited to bring our charging stations to some of the largest college campuses in the U.S.,” said Paul Golden, Chief Marketing Officer of Samsung Mobile. “Samsung Mobile charging stations will help students and faculty stay powered up and connected both in and out of the classroom.

Samsung Mobile is kicking off its nationwide collegiate program with special on-campus events at San Diego State University and The University of Colorado – Boulder today, to educate students and promote the features of the mobile charging stations. The events will feature Parkour climbing demonstrations, live music, free massages to relieve stress from the academic year and energy bars and drinks. Samsung Mobile Brand Ambassadors will be on-site to give demonstrations of the Samsung Omnia II and answer questions about the charging stations.

In addition, Samsung Mobile is hosting a two-day “Charge Up” challenge at San Diego State University. The Samsung Mobile “Charge Up” challenge is designed to test a student’s physical and mental endurance. In the first challenge, students have to scale to the top of a 24-foot climbing wall. The fastest male and female competitor to make it to the top of the wall will receive a Samsung Omnia II by Verizon Wireless and $1,000, to use towards books or other school supplies needed for the upcoming semester. The second challenge encourages students to participate in Samsung Mobile’s first-ever “SWYPE Challenge,” which coincides with the upcoming 2010 NCAA March Madness basketball tournament. In this bracket-style tournament, students will have to quickly and accurately text message a series of words that relate to college basketball on the Samsung Omnia II. Bracket winners will advance to the next round until one winner is crowned champion and awarded an Omnia II and $500.

Samsung Mobile Charging Stations are outfitted with eight electrical outlets per station, allowing several people to re-charge their electronic devices at the same time for free. The stations are built to charge personal electronics designed for U.S. voltage (i.e., 120 volts), and are also equipped with a small shelf to hold mobile phones and other electronic equipment. The charging stations will be installed in student unions and at on-campus sporting venues to keep student and faculty users’ personal electronics powered up.

To date, Samsung Mobile has installed more than 300 Samsung Mobile charging stations in 10 of the nation’s busiest airports including Miami International Airport (MIA), Houston InterContinental Airport (IAH), Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD), John F. Kennedy International Airport (JFK), Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR), Los Angeles International Airport (LAX), LaGuardia Airport (LGA), Orlando International Airport (MCO) and Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP) which are accessible to more than 395 million passengers.
