Here's my suggestion.
Like most people, I download a lot of tweeks, patches etc. I do this in short stolen moments, and install them sometime later. I probably only end up keeping 10% of them on my phone, therest just don't meet my needs or interests, something that was not clear when I downloaded them.

So my problem is that I usually don't remember which apps I got from this website or that, and trying to figure out where to go to donate weeks later when I'm sure I'll be using the App, is time-consuming. I don't have much time to spare, so I end up not doing it.

I suggest that sites like XDA might keep track of my downloads so when I log in I could click on my profile and delete the Apps I'm not using from this list, and click on those I am in order to make a PayPal donation to the Developer. Quick, easy and I don't have to remember the post I got them from! Just make certain that no-one can access the list but the User. For those with privacy issues, you could allow people to opt out, or instead email to the account address the details, including a link to donate.

It's always going to be good to reward good behaviour, so consider giving points for donations that are redeamable for a free download or even a cool graphic on your Profile. Anything to make paying up fun.

David, great write up.

I have thought of this as well and often wonder what an appropriate level of donation is for our Developers. Someone can correct me if my thinking is wrong on this, but most of my paid apps range from $9.99 to $29.99 some are less, some are even more. But if EVERYONE took the middle range, say from $15 - $25 donation it would go a long way to support our team.

Just my 2cents.
