Time for Microsoft to get aggressive with advertising and compare Win8 tablets to iPads

March 16th, 2013 — 10:15pm

imageA buddy of mine told me he was going to get his kids an iPad. They’re young and he figured it was probably enough for them and he didn’t want to spend a lot of money like a PC but they would use it for school. Then I pulled up the Staples ad and showed him what he was missing. The Atom based tablet PCs share a lot – prices of $600 or less (the Lynx at $550 and the HP Envy X2 at $600 but with a keyboard); 11.6” displays; a tablet with keyboard option; 7+ hours of battery life; 64GB storage; touchscreens and of course they can also function as full PCs. A 64GB iPad is $700 by comparison. It took him all of 5 seconds to decide to buy the Envy X2. Why didn’t he make that decision without me? He had no idea the product existed. The idea of a tablet that docks and is a full PC in this price range wasn’t on his radar. And these Staples print ads are fine and all but that’s not really telling a story.

Bottom line is that Microsoft should be showing these things off on tv and telling the story of what people can be getting for their dollar. They may not think that the iPad is competing with Windows 8 tablets but if they don’t understand that then they also don’t understand why Apple owns the tablet market. Windows 8 tablets aren’t even in most tablet conversations and that’s the problem…there’s still an information gap and the current commercials don’t cut it. They need to get on the tv and go at them and show consumers what they could get for the same price.

Is Find My iPhone worth it?

March 12th, 2013 — 4:31pm

pictureA friend posted on Facebook this morning that she & her husband had been awoken at 3:30am by their dog barking. After yelling for her to shut it, they went back to sleep.

When morning came, they had to apologize to the dog: the friend’s purse, sitting by the door, had been stolen. (Luckily, the barking seems to have been enough – the Macbook Pro 4 feet away was untouched).

Enter Find My iPhone to save the day! With the police right there, they pinged the phone and realized it was only a few short blocks away. They got near, set the audible alarm and presto! The police found the purse, iPhone and all, under a doghouse, waiting to be picked up by the thief.

So is Find My iPhone worth it? She might say “Yes” now. And I hope that the dog is getting a nice, juicy steak tonight!

Me, I’m moving my purse’s resting area away from the door immediately.

Tech For Dummies: iPad in Bathroom

March 9th, 2013 — 3:44pm

I’m sorry but are we as a society have not gotten to the point where the newspaper reading in a bathroom can be acceptably replaced by an iPad in a bathroom. Certainly not in a public bathroom. Yuppy-central Starbucks doesn’t qualify as an exception. In true spirit of George Costanza allow me to impart some advice. There is no amount of explaining you can do to justify taking an iPad into a public restroom. None!

Wait, did I just call myself a yuppy? Those are the breaks.

Lady Misuses IPad In Public

March 1st, 2013 — 11:50pm

That moment when you realize technology has fallen into the hands of an idiot. That sums up this woman and her penchant for whipping out her iPad and snapping pictures as if that’s in any way acceptable. The crowd snickered and more than a few people told her to sit her arse down. Wait, maybe that was just me?!

Apple Gets Bitten By Patent Troll Over FaceTime & iMessage

February 28th, 2013 — 10:36am

A Federal Judge has upheld the $368 million award, and denied Apple’s request for a new trial. The judge also ruled that Apple must pay$330,000 a day to VirnetX, a company that profits from purchased patents, until the two parties get together on a licensing deal for the four patents involved, . If both sides fail to reach agreement in 45 days, the judge will make a final ruling.

The lawsuit centers around patents allegedly infringed upon by Apple in Facetime and iMessage. Apple’s chief defense is that even if they have used similar technology to the patented tech in creating Facetime and iMessage it only amounts to a very small part of the complex software.

There is something about patent trolls that nobody likes. Lets hope Apple and VimetX can work out a reasonable settlement and not drag this out.

Apple releases two new iPad commercials, still uninspiring

Apple releases two new iPad commercials, still uninspiring

Apple has clearly parted ways with the super simple format of their product commercials from yesteryear. Now, we get an up tempo production to some random word association matching. Although the ads themselves are okay, I still can’t help but feel there is something more to be desired. It used to be, when an Apple commercial aired, the room stood still to see what feature they’d highlight and how they’d do it. Now? All you’re left with is this. Is this a sign?

Friday Tech Humor: iPad Usage Gone Wrong!

February 8th, 2013 — 11:46am

Every once in a while we get a glimpse of someone being so wrong about how to use technology that you have no choice but to issue out a face palm. Not just any face palm but the Doh! kind of face palm reserved for only the most ridiculous images we come across. I present to you iPad Fanny Abuse.
