WiFi Automator & Battery Saver Works

imageI saw WiFi Automator & Battery Saver in Marketplace the other day and the dev was nice enough to provide me with a demo to test. The results? Big smiles. The app automatically turns on your wifi when you’re in a known wifi area, turns it off when you’re out of the area and it works in the background so there’s nothing to fool with. See, once the app is running (silently in the background) all you do is turn on wifi and connect as usual. The next time you’re in that location it will automatically turn on your wifi and connect. There’s no setup. Nothing manual to do. And it works. My HD2 doesn’t work on AT&T’s 3G but now when I’m in my house or at work my phone automatically connects to wifi. And if I’m out and about wifi is off to save battery life. This doesn’t use GPS (it’s using cell tower ID) so there’s no battery drain. I’ve been using it for about a week now and I have to say – I’m loving it and I don’t know how I lived without this.

We’ve discussed WifiLocations in the past that functions similarly (and includes a few extra features) but it doesn’t do background configuration and the lack of any setup is greatly appreciated. The app itself barely has an interface in fact because there’s none needed. I know it seems like a little thing, but it’s one of those simple apps that works as advertised and for the $1.99 price it’s a bargain. In fact, in the last few days I’ve been using the web on my phone a lot more just because it’s automatically there and blazing fast over wifi.

You can find the app here on Marketplace
