77% of smartphone users won’t buy the new Blackberry

So here’s the results of a survey that this company did, 77% of those surveyed won’t be buying the new BlackBerry with 40% of current BlackBerry owners saying they will not be upgrading either.  The poll was of 1,000 smartphone owners, so I’m not sure it’s good sampling but if it’s any indication then BlackBerry is in trouble, but then I think we already knew that… The company that did the survey is called Voucher Codes, it’s a coupon site, so it’s not exactly a professional survey of owners, but it’s food for thought I guess. There’s some more stats in the full PR below..

As BlackBerry reveals its make or break BB10 software and Z10 handset on January 30, research from VoucherCodes.co.uk reveals the manufacturer may be too late to win the smartphone war.

The poll of smartphone users found that over three quarters would not consider switching to a Blackberry, despite the launch of the firm’s first-ever touch screen only phone. Even among current Blackberry users, just 40 per cent say they would consider upgrading their phone.

Despite manufacturer Research In Motion (RIM) once leading the way in the smartphone market, nine out of ten people questioned felt the promised new technology wouldn’t be enough for them to reconsider the brand.

In addition, 42 per cent claimed they didn’t believe Blackberry made user-friendly phones, almost a third (31 per cent) said they didn’t consider them to be good value for money and over a quarter (26 per cent) simply felt Blackberry was no longer a desirable brand.

When asked about what their next phone purchase was likely to be, nearly half (44 per cent) of Blackberry users said they were planning on moving to an iPhone and 38 per cent said they were considering buying a Samsung.

The research also highlighted the success of Android in cornering the lucrative younger end of the smart phone market with the operating system claiming 42 per cent of all Smartphone users in the 18-24 year old age bracket compared to just  18 per cent for Blackberry.

Duncan Jennings, co-founder of VoucherCodes.co.uk says: “Today’s consumers have so much more choice when it comes to buying smartphones, compared to when the first Blackberry launched back in 2003. Unfortunately for RIM, our research shows their customers are hanging up their Blackberrys in favour of better value handsets and phones designed for social networking.

“We’d advise anyone thinking of getting a new smartphone, whatever the make or model, to research online first.  Smartphones are still a significant investment, however, manufacturers will discount handsets a few months after launch, so if you’re prepared to wait you can get a phone at a price that suits you.”

Research was carried out by One Poll amongst 1,000 Smartphone users on 14 January 2013
