Comparing Apples to Apples

ipod If I hear one more person tell me about how beautiful the screen is on the iPhone…let’s get some things straight. Windows phones have a lot sharper screens than the iPhone. Let’s just make a quick comparison:

Phone Resolution Total Pixels Screen Size Pixels Per Inch (Pixel Density)
iPhone 320×480 (HVGA) 153,600 3.5” 163
Touch HD 480×800(WVGA) 384,000 3.8” 246
Touch Pro 480×640(VGA) 307,200 2.8” 287
Tilt 240×320(QVGA) 76,800 2.8” 143

So a few things are easy to spot. Yes, the Touch HD (and the Touch Pro 2, Diamond 2, etc) have about 2.5 times as many pixels as the iPhone and in terms of pixels per inch (which is probably the most important factor) the Touch Pro is a whopping 76% higher than the iPhone. This means it’s a lot sharper screen. The Diamond 2 will have even more impressive specs based on the size of the screen relative to the resolution. And in fact, the iPhone is really in a league closer to the Tilt than any of the current Windows devices. So using a smaller screen (like the Touch Pro) will still give you relatively the same view as the larger screened iPhone because the image is sharper and of course, the Touch Pro 2 blows it out of the water. So while most of the current Windows phones are relatively the same size as the iPhone’s screen they’re significantly sharper. And the numbers aren’t close or just a hair off – they are off the chart and generationally different.

I just needed to get that off my chest:)
