Opera Mini 6.1 and Opera Mobile 11.1 released, smarter and faster
|Updates! Yes, we all do love updates. Opera often updates their mobile web browsers for all kind of phones, including the dumb ones – feature phone. Opera, today released new versions of their mobile browsers, Opera Mini 6.1 and Opera Mobile 11.1.
One of the new features of Opera Mini & Mobile is that, now you can use the address bar to not only input a website’s url but also use it as a search bar (but still the search bar is right there beside the address bar.) The new "psychic bar" will also provide suggestions from Google search and your browser history as soon as you begin typing. Also, the address bar is now smart enough to analyse your surfing habits and automatically add domains like .com, .net when a url is typed in.
“We have a saying at Opera: Listen to our users,” said Dag Olav Norem, VP Product Management, Opera Software. “As a company, we are constantly listening to our users on what they want in their browser. So, to our most vocal consumers, thank you and keep the feedback coming!”
And so, they know that selecting text is one of the things you often do while browsing. It just got a little enhancement – draggable handle bars for more accurate text selection. Just like the way you copy any text in iOS or WP7.
Just to refresh your memory, Opera Mini and Opera Mobile are different in some ways even though they look exactly same visually. Opera Mini is generally for feature phones but you can run them on smartphones too (that’s why they are called “smart” phones.) In Opera Mini, all the heavy rendering work of webpages etc… are done on the Opera server, then it’s compressed and sent to your phone. Whereas, Opera Mobile works on devices which can do the heavy duty of rendering webpages right on the device. At the same time, you still have the option to enable/disable compression (Opera Turbo) on Opera Mobile.

Some of my fondest browsing moments during my windows mobile days was on opera mini. Initially I thought the whole WP7 experience was going to be unbearable without Opera Mini but fortunately ie that was included has been a quite pleasant experience.
