Bwahahaha!

klingon-languageI grew up with Star Trek.  THIS made me laugh.

Bing Translator (in cooperation with Paramount Pictures’ “Star Trek:Into Darkness” of course) will now translate to and from Klingon. And they even had Marc Okrand’s assistance.

The HTC One made an iPhone user out of me

May 9th, 2013 — 12:05pm Posted by Ramon Trotman

It’s no secret how much I love HTC’ new “Like a BOSS” device, aka the HTC One. Stellar design, perfect display, fun features all around, the thing is just winner. The only problem here is my unshakable loyalty to the Microsoft!

It doesn’t matter if the HTC One made breakfast before I woke up on a daily basis, no live tiles, no Facebook integration (the way I like it,) and no Nokia branding means it will never win! Except, I can’t stop using the thing.

I can’t help but to relate to iPhone users around the world using devices other than their jesus phone. No matter how much you like that “other” thing, you always come home. Right? Right! Damn you HTC! Where is the HTC Windows One… WHERE IS IT?!

Lenovo ThinkPad Tablet 2 for Business and Entertainment

April 12th, 2013 — 9:21pm Posted by Ram Uppugunduri

If you are looking for an alternative to Surface Pro, or you like the quality of Lenovo ThinkPad and looking for a Multitouch Windows 8 (Pro) tablet with digitizer/stylus support, here is a solid laptop for Business and THEntertainment. Keep in mind that this runs on Intel Atom processor unlike Surface Pro, which runs on Intel’s 3rd Generation i5 processor. Also the on board RAM is maxed to 2GB, while Surface Pro comes with 4GB RAM.

Here are the features of it and some of them can be customized on Lenovo site before buying:

ThinkPad Tablet 2 – 64 GB with WiFi, Pen & Digitizer

Processor: Intel® Atom™ Processor Z2760 (DC/4T, 1.8Ghz Burst, 1.5Ghz HFM, 600Mhz LFM)
Operating System: Windows 8 32-bit (customizable to Windows 8 Pro 32bit)
Display: 10.1″ (16:9) HD WXGA (1366×768), Multitouch IPS
Memory: 2GB LPDDR2 (I haven’t seen any opportunity to upgrade RAM to 4GB on Lenovo site)
Warranty: 1 Year Depot/Express Warranty (variety of extended warranties available)
Integrated Mobile Broadband: No Mobile Broadband support
Battery: 2-cell Li-Polymer Battery, 30 Wh

With the above basic features this costs US$699

Note: I haven’t seen any mention on Lenovo site to upgrade RAM and internal storage. I would definitely recommend Lenovo to give potential buyers for RAM upgrade to 4GB and internal storage to 128GB.

This comes with optional Bluetooth keyboard with stand for additional US$120.

Lenovo has sent me an email today with 15% discount coupon. Here is the code if you are interested in utilizing this: OyRA95FWTyUA and this is valid through Wednesday (04/17/2013). You could use it on Lenovo site once you checkout.

Daddy’s little girl wants to be the hero? Like a boss.

March 11th, 2013 — 3:40pm Posted by Marti M

rpg_toonsYou guys might not be able to wrap your mind around this one, but as many times as we’ve probably heard this, if you’re a girl in a man’s world, finding female heros/leads/role models is Not That Easy. When I was growing up, the first strong woman character I was aware of was Nichelle Nichol’s Uhura, and even she was 1/2 eye candy in the mini-dress, 1/4 helpless female, and 1/4 strong female.  The first pseudo-hero(s) I can recall are Electra Woman and Dyna Girl, from the old Sid & Marty Krofft Supershow, which was a lot of camp, really. And the only reason I mention them INSTEAD of Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman is, well let’s be fair, WW was more eye candy than substance, amiright?

Today’s girls have a little more depth to choose from, except in gaming. “Oh, what about Laura Croft?” you say. Short shorts and a tank top? mmhm. Any female in a fantasy genre game? T&A fanservice, right there.

So here’s my shout-out to Father of the Year: When his 3-year-old was upset that the Princess couldn’t save Mario in Donkey Kong, he HACKED THAT SH**.

Mine just bought me & my sister cowboys and indians. And trains.

More rumors

March 5th, 2013 — 11:28am Posted by Marti M

instagram
Now that we’ve seen exactly how accurate rumors can be, I have to put this one out there because it’s near and dear to our Ramon’s heart:

Instagram.

The darling of iOS, says Chinese site WPDang, just might be coming to Lumia devices as an exclusive. It’s supposed to be in the testing phase, and includes one additional unnamed filter that the iOS version doesn’t have.

But I won’t hold my breath. I’ll just wait for the scream of delight from Ramon if this pans out.

These aren’t the S IVs you’re looking for

March 5th, 2013 — 11:17am Posted by Marti M

alecguiness
So yesterday, Murani mentioned that @evleaks posted Samsung Galaxy S IV renders.

Ooops, he was wrong. Expansys has gone to Twitter to say, “Nope, those are our mock-ups.”

You can go about your business. Move along.

SG4 to feature eye scrolling technology

March 4th, 2013 — 3:13pm Posted by Ramon Trotman

According to the king of rumors before any given device launch (NYT,) the Samsung’s upcoming flagship will feature some pretty nifty eye tracking technology.

The way the tech works, the phone will keep track of yours eyes, once it senses you’re to the bottom of the screen, its simple scrolls for you! The feature is to be called “Samsung Eye Scroll.”

Upon further ridding, NYT has also stumbled upon a trademark called “Eye Pause.” If I had to make a guess, I would say this feature works similarly to Eye Scroll but does so with video. If the phone detects you looking away, it pauses the video. Neat indeed, but that’s just my guess.

With Apple boring the hell out of consumers, could this be the pull away segment for Samsung? Features like these will sure be killer in those commercials!

NEC Medias W:Dual-screen smartphone

March 1st, 2013 — 10:53am Posted by Marti M

IMG_3135-650x366Well, evidently I missed the Kyocera Echo, so this is the first time I’ve seen a dual-screen smartphone.

My first reaction is “WTF?” But then I think about the teen-aged generation: they’ve already been indoctrinated with a dual-screen device in Nintendo’s DS series. This will probably be Very Easy for them to deal with.

With a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB of RAM, an 8mp rear-facing camera and a 1.3mp front-facing camera, 16GB of on-board storage, and a microSD slot, this sucker is coming to Japan only.

I don’t know. I think I’d have to get some hands-on time before I gave this serious thought, if it ever comes to the West.

Yahoo CEO Mistake Or Stroke of Genius

February 27th, 2013 — 6:42pm Posted by James Schneider

yahooCEO

Recently the CEO of Yahoo Marissa Mayer’s made an announcement to employee’s who work remotely must come in to the office or well you know the other option, not be an employee anymore.

As a software developer I’ve done a mix of home and office time.  While I don’t have children at home coming into the office to interrupt I do have dogs and cats that love to distract.  (yes both)  It does take discipline to stay focused and on task at home but I believe it takes the same focus while in the office.

For me I share an office with a fellow dev and we have Product Managers/Owners coming in with new feature requests or bugs to talk about.  Which in turn pulls our attention away from what we are currently working on; and then takes time to get back on the original task that you were working on.

I believe both ways of working have their benefits.  While in the office our team will have these out of the blue organic talks about our business and website that we may not have had if we were working remotely.  However, if you have a team of really solid communicators, I’m not just talking about over the phone but in all forms, (IM, Video Chat) you can still have these moments of brilliance.

One can understand that Yahoo is in a rough spot right now, to say the least and that they need all hands on deck to right the ship.  However, I don’t believe that all your employees need to be physically in the office at all times to get the collaboration that can create magic.  I also think that a sweeping memorandum like this can hurt your company and obliterate employee morale.

What we here would like to know is what you our fearless readers think?  Do you work from home and get worked up when you think your boss may say to you "come into the office or else"?  Or are you in complete support of being always physically in the office?  Or do you say who the hell is Yahoo?
