Consider yourself a die hard hockey fan? Own a Xbox 360? Well, you’re in luck! Microsoft just announced the NHL GameCenter app, which serves up all you can eat news, replays and live scores. For an extra $50, you can subscribe to watch live games all around the league no matter the time or place.

But that’s not all, get this, there is a split screen feature to allow you to watch two games at once, on top of the availability of over 800 classic games for your viewing pleasure. Beware, like many other premium services, this too will require the yearly $50 Xbox Live gold subscription. They sure did go all out on this app, my question is, where is the NFL and NBA equivalent?!

NHL GameCenter on Xbox LIVE offers the following features:

  • Follow the Action from the 2013 NHL Season – Get real-time game scores, player stats and team standings. All Xbox LIVE Gold Members can also follow the action on and off the ice from the NHL VideoCenterTM. Watch the best goals, saves and hits from around the league this season.

  • Mini Guide – The Mini Guide gives you a quick preview of all of today’s action right at the bottom of your screen, and makes it easier than ever to switch between games.
  • Split Screen – Keep an eye on the rest of the league while cheering on your home team! With Split Screen, you can watch two games at once and do just that. Watch live games on both screens or a live game on one while you catch up with a game recap on the other. You can control both screens independently, pausing and rewinding each separately so you never miss a second of the action.
  • Classic Games from NHL Vault™ –Relive your favorite moments in NHL history with on-demand access to over 800 classic games from NHL Vault™. 1. Had to subscribe to this on Saturday night (former Devils season ticket holder for 27 years). App wouldn’t open via XBox, but I was able to use the HDMI output on my Asus notebook to save the day. When the XBox app did finally start working on Sunday, couldn’t watch three minutes without the game pausing and waiting for things to catch up (anything not live worked fine). Tonight the same thing. So I tried rewinding the game about a minute and now it works perfectly.

Going to try the same trick with the MLB app in April. That app also suffered from buffering all last season. Not sure about this NHL app, but the MLB app was typically buffered about 15-30 seconds, but I don’t think that’s enough to maintain stability through the whole game.
