Qualcomm announces new 1.3GHz chipset with 30 percent power improvement
|Qualcomm has announced the new Snapdragon QSD8650A chipset, which features a 1.3GHz processor, enhanced multimedia and graphics processing, and power consumption improvements. The announcement was made at the Computex show in Taipei, Taiwan.
The QSD8650A includes integrated GPS, Bluetooth 2.1, support for WiFi and multi-mode support for UMTS and CDMA 3G connectivity. The new processor can also support WXGA displays and mobile TV technologies like MediaFLO, DVB-H, and ISDB-T.
The new chipset’s tiny footprint measures in at 15mm x 15mm. It even manages to lower power consumption by 30 percent over its 1.0GHz predecessor, and has an impressive standby power of less than 10 milliwatts.
Also at Computex, Qualcomm showed off a new ASUS Eee PC netbook running on a 1.0GHz Snapdragon processor with the Google Android operating system. The company called the device a "smartbook," since the Snapdragon CPU requires neither fan nor heat sink to operate, which allows the device to be much thinner and lighter than traditional netbooks.
